J, interesting to note one con for the hydraulic winches: too strong that may scratch your GRP and god forbid damage the anchor camera

Yep, basically just a big metal structure, badly corroded.
Hard to tell what it was, but considering the location relatively far from the shore, I would think that some fishing boat had some sort of crane support which was due for replacement and just thought to chunk it overboard before fitting the new one...

Re. the winch, for the records it's fair to say that also BA winch pulled the "monster", as jfm aptly called it, without much effort.
It ain't hydraulic, but still massive (2.5kW, IIRC).
When I said "if you hear the winch struggling", it's because we noticed that the chain was occasionally "jumping" on the gipsy, as if wasn't free to rotate. Which in fact wasn't, due to the monster.
It's indeed a dangerous thing anyway. I suspect that many boats with a much less powerful winche could be left with no other choice than diving or abandoning the anchor...

He appeared to be on the main (lower) deck, at the portside wing control in a white T-shirt....not a bad old tub either!

'scuse the late recovery of the fender, you can't imagine how hard it is to find efficient deck hands these days...

By the looks of the fender it may have needed the deck crane to retrieve it....

Mmm... I would have thought to earn more virtual points by pretending to be an experienced pilot capable to handle such ship, rather than for being friend of some russian oligarch.
It's a bit disappointing to see how money and power are more respected than competence, these days!

She was amazingly quiet while passing by, and I wondered if her props are driven by electric motors, with modular generators to feed them.
To my knowledge, that's the only way to avoid having massive diesels running, even if at idle, also while maeuvering...

Dilbar's machinery is well known and top-of-the-class at the time. 4 azimuthing pods, 2 forward and two aft, running off the hotel gensets with (obv) elec motors in the pods. These function as bow/stern thrusters and slow speed propulsion. Then at higher speed, out of harbour, the main engines start up. I don't recall whether main engines drive the shafts directly or also make electricity to power electric propulsion motors - I think the latter, and Lurssen continued to do several more like that including ICE (ex AIR) (or is it the other way around?) that you will have passed on your stb side (anchored at the port entrance) 5 mins before you shot that video (dark grey hull) and which was launched the following year. Dilbar also has a whole pile of exhaust particle filtration. Quite a set up...

Geez, azimuthing thrusters which work also as slow speed propulsion...
That makes the soundtrack of my previous short video, stolen from "The hunt for red october", even more appropriate!
I never heard of that, but surely explains the sort of stealth mode which we had the opportunity to witness.
Just curious, do you know if they are also retractable?
I would think that those pods must be massive, hence creating quite some drag when cruising normally...
