Thanks Mike. That brought back memories. I was actually at the Solihull Round Table meeting when that was recorded.

Met David Gunson on several occaisions afterwards during my time as a pilot. Totally agree with his assessment of flying helicopters. Even went to the West Drayton air traffic control centre once. Fascinating.
 
Traveling down the upper Rhine, the river/canal follows the boarder between France and Germany. some locks are are German controled and some French. On approaching one lock I radio requested transit of the lock in my best schoolboy French. The reply was, you can ask in English, you can ask in German, but do not ask in French. On another occasion in Holland I radioed requesting a lift bridge to open, After 3 requests and no answer the controler eventualy replied, in English - I will not lift the bridge until you pronouce the name of the bridge and my beautiful town correctly, try again. So the Germans and Dutch also have a sense of humour.
