Me and the boy are thinking of heading for Amsterdam this summer, weather permitting. From what I've read, Sixhaven sounds a complete hassle, but a new 350-berth is now open, and there may be other options. Any advice or recent experiences appreciated. Any suggestions for a berth somewhere near Amsterdam with good public transport connections might fit the bill. Thanks.

Nowt wrong with Sixhaven and it's good for the ferry straight across to the centre with the station very close and the biggest bicycle park in the world

Where and what is this new marina?

Havn't been to Amsterdam for a few years, but found Sixhaven popular for good reasons. Always got in (sometimes a bit of a squash) and enjoyed it. Perhaps it would be worth trying to get in and then making up your own mind. However if there is a new convenient option then this too would be worth looking at.

I am in Sixhaven. It is noisy but very convenient. It seems to fill up after 4 so an arrival mid morning would coincide with those leaving and some space available.

10am seems to be the time everyone leaves, I find it quite jolly and good natured, it is certainly convenient, we had noise last time we were there from the big Civil's project going on near by, but we got used to it.

What's the one half a mile east of Sixhaven? We had two weeks there when buying The Kipper and it was small, friendly and next to a great pub.

If you are coming from the east, there is a handy little YC marina between the bridge and the locks where you can overnight and be ready to jump into Sixhaven mid-morning when boats are leaving.

north bank midwayish between amsterdam and zaandam. looked quite well protected, and plenty of room. dont know about public transport.

I was in Sixhaven last summer and works going on right next door.
Not the nicest of Marinas but completely adequate. Very convenient for Dam SQ, central Amsterdam etc.
Go into Ijmuiden ovenight if you arrive late. Leave at 7am next morning, through lock, 14 miles to Sixhaven, so 2.5 hours run. Arrive sixhaven say 11am and straight in.
Head off into the Markemeer and Ijselmeer afterwards- cruised there many times- delightful.
