The aircraft one particularly. Its reason is, I was told by someone in the business, solely an agreement between IATA members and the world's telecoms to prevent logging on and off when passing through the multiple stations en route. I remember returning once from somewhere or other to Zurich and taking the phone out of my briefcase and finding I had forgotten to turn it off when boarding - with greetings on the screen from Turkcell as we passed over Turkey.

Not mentioned hitherto, I think: you can get some newspapers on the Kindle - 99p for a Times or an Independant. And easier to read in a windy anchorage than the paper version!

Here in Turkey it's election day. I hope to read an analysis of the results in the next day or two.

Kindle rant: no access to kindle UK, (resident in Belgistan), so obliged to access amazon.com. Am not "merkin", and am miffed that I can't access site from home country. And "experimental" Kindle stuff (eg passageweather) works OK on 3G at home, but not abroad. All i can do when outside of BE is buy books, good marketing or what?

Surprised by that, since I've received Passageweather on 3G fine in Spain, Portugal, France -- a real bonus when other forms of internet aren't available. Share some of your frustration, though, with some of Amazon's practices.

As far as Kindle's browser, Amazon states that it is experimental. The Kindle is primarily an ereader not an internet browser. You can use it to get on the internet in a pinch. I do find that it will work best with mobile websites, not full blown website. Check out www.kinstant.com for links formatted for use with the Kindle.

Apologies for a bit of thread drift but it seems to have happened already.... posting here because there seems to be loads of kindle knowledge!

Even when turned off my 3G kindle is receiving / transmitting. At least I think so, because when placed next to my ancient clock radio it makes the same noises as my phone!

Is there any way to turn this off completely, as required in flight?

Press the menu button and select 'turn wireless off' is should shut down wifi and 3g. - Your battery will also last ten time longer literally.

Oh and look at my signature - cos I've got two Kindle books out and one is a novel about sailing!!! (sorry just had to say that!)

I have about 200 books aboard, plus a crate of swaps in the focs'le. I'm 3.5 tons overweight (or at least the boat is...) and looking to remove them. I don't have a Kindle - though I publish marine/espionage thrillers on Kindle. I use the Kindle for PC app (free) on my laptop, and it works well. The lower cost (usually) of Kindle publications makes it attractive too, though the social aspects of books swaps are disappearing.
