Amazon Kindle to free up shelf space

emandvee:
strange. The drop-downs I get are the opposite of the ones shown in your two jpegs, which I think are from the Kindle User Guide. 'Create new collection' only appears from the Home page. If I hit 'Menu' from within a collection, I get the shorter drop down list shown in your first post.

My Kindle did update its software a few days ago. Maybe that's the reason.

Sorry couldn't help.

Thanks macd.

I should explain (if it is not already obvious), that we are not Computer friendly individuals - perhaps the word dinosaurs would be more accurate.

Well we have made progress, and I am posting this in case there are others out there who have not picked up on this next point.

So, when all else fails, read the book!

I discovered that the software version in our brand new Kindle (delivered yesterday), was way out of date, so it appears they do not carry out updates in the distribution centre (Kentucky). Whatever the software version when it was made in China, is what you get.

I was able to download the latest software to my computer, and then connect the Kindle and 'drag and drop' the software. It did not work. The Kindle says it has the new software installed, but the software version shown is the old one.

Had enough frustration for one night.

Cheers to all,

ps the white version is very nice !

sorry to hear of your continued problems. Part of the Kindle's USP (unique selling point...it's that sort of product) is that it's friendly to self-confessed sauropods like you. Yours isn't. It doesn't work. Pile of poo. Not fit for purpose. Tell this to those smug sods at Amazon via the link you got when buying the thing. (Sorry, it's 0100 here, I've had a drink and felt like rant).

You must connect to a wifi network, the 3G will then be off, the update will not come over a 3G connection. Leave your Kindle on wifi for awhile (mine took about 15 minutes, some take longer), also, make sure the connection is strong. The update will be delivered to the Kindle over the wifi. When the Kindle is in sleep mode, the update is initialized automatically. You will know that it came thru if you press Settings (from Home page) and at the bottom you see version 3.1.

Kindle flight safe?

Apologies for a bit of thread drift but it seems to have happened already.... posting here because there seems to be loads of kindle knowledge!

Even when turned off my 3G kindle is receiving / transmitting. At least I think so, because when placed next to my ancient clock radio it makes the same noises as my phone!

Is there any way to turn this off completely, as required in flight?

As the Original Poster I have come back to thank all the contributers. I have picked up some useful web sites, tips and book recommendations.
I think a general point is that Kindle is not a complete substitute for paper bookss but it is an interesting alternative. My only frustration is that, even though it has a good music playing facility the memory is too small to carry many tunes.... and memory is cheap these days.
What could be more pleasant than reading a good book with your favourite tunes playing in the background... Well several things but you know what I mean.

Press the menu button and 'turn off wireless' is one of the options.

I keep it off on mine as this makes a dramatic difference to battery life.

For those thinking of using this file conversion to Kindle program (I've been playing with it) - be aware that it seems not properly to close down. Even though it 'disappears', if you look in Task Manager Processes, it's still there in memory. I've had to End Process from there, which is not so good.

Several options:
1. Download the Jeffrey Archer Omnibus, and your Kindle will go to sleep. Forever.

2. Slide the off/on switch and hold for 7 seconds. Don't know how dead this renders it (less than (1), probably).

3. From Kindle user guide:
To prevent possible interference with aircraft systems, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration regulations and many other aviation agencies require you to have permission from a crew member to use your device's wireless service. If you have your wireless service turned off, you can use your Kindle for reading once a crew member has said it is okay to use electronic devices.

Hope (some of that) helps.

Don't tell the airlines, but modern electronic devices like ipods, ipads, iphones, kindles etc never actually turn off. They go in to a low power state, but have circuitry powered up that sits there waiting for you to press something.

Kindle Software Updates

Hi Folks,

Success at last!

My dear SWMBO has managed to update our Kindle with help from afar. I do not know the details exactly but it appears that the updates are relevant to the original serial number of the unit. Anyway we are now up to date !

Thanks to all for your help and suggestions - we hope to join you soon.

Michael.

That is like sleep mode on a laptop. You can turn them all off fully, and turn off 3g and wifi as well even when they are powered on.

Please tell me how you turn off an iphone *fully*. You can't. The battery is permanently connected to the electronics. Even when you think you have turned it off, there is still circuitry powered up so that it can be turned back on again.

(Clue: read my bio)

take out the battery?

The whole basis of the ruling, in hospitals, aircraft or owt else is apocryphal

As a continuation of the original "how to save shelf-space" - I've just uploaded 88 audio-books into an old 40Gb 2.5" HDD (out of an old Dell 8600, the HDD being replaced by a 120Gb when I rebuilt it) in an external USB enclosure.
There's still 23% of the space available.
I listen to the audio books on my Nokia mobiles - but with MP3 players costing about £12, lookalike iPods - I could dedicate several to just listening.
