Amazon Kindle to free up shelf space

"Bargains worth reading? Hmmm that would definitely be a good thread.
Unfortunately I haven't managed to find any yet "

Settle down with a cup of coffee, or glass of wine, and ask Amazon to sort their e-book catalogue by price, lowest first. You will find thousands of out of copyright books for nothing, or a few pence. It is a bit of a slog (if a pleasant one) to plough through the thousands of titles, mind you! For that kind of money, and enormous space on the Kindle, there's no reason not to download all those classics you always meant to read (Dickens, Shakespeare, Jane Austen....) - some are really good reads! I have a lot of Conrad, which I'd never read before. If you can't find anything that appeals in that lot, I wonder what you are looking for!

Unfortunately I haven't managed to find any yet :(

Then you really haven't looked very hard, even Amazon has many free Kindle titles as anything earlier than 1923 (I think it is) is out of copyright. As I've posted earlier on this thread, Project Gutenberg has over 33'000 free e-books available. A vast collection of classics are there from such sea-oriented authors as Jack London, Joseph Conrad and Joshua Slocum, including 'Knots, Splices and Rope Work' by A. Hyatt Verrill, with beautiful old-time illustrations and sketches.

I've loaded my Kindle with over 100 of them and am currently re-reading some Somerset Maugham and being reminded what a fine writer he was.

Canterbury Tales from Amazon.com is definitely in GB English. Beowulf, too. Sort of.
Does that Help?

Well, sort of...! it would surprise me to see some Yank going through (thru) Chaucer and Americanising it. But what of, say, a bog-standard thriller by Forsyth, or some litracher like Tolstoy or Mann?

yes, so what are your recommendations for good, free (or nearly free) books then??
I particularly like thrillers and murder mysteries :)

Grrr (not at you...connection dropped and erased my response)...have several potentials downloaded but not yet read. Will get back to you. In meantime Steig larsson trilogy not "nearly free" but good value at £2.50ea. Hammet now just about out of copyright but prices holding, but could I bring myself to ditch hard copies even if that were not so?

Kindle or not!!!!

My partner and I will be moving on to our yacht and sailing away by 28 July. We bought the yacht in November last year and have been busy preparing it ever since.

She came to the conclusion that Kindle was the way forward - to save space. I agree in principal. However, reference books need to be a physical thing that you can have open whilst doing a repair etc. I feel the kindle would be a bit vulnerable surrounded by tools. We bought the 12 volt battery bible on kindle and it is a great book. But I wish we had it in hard copy.

I like the idea of book swap - it is a means of making friends at the same time. When you next meet up you might even discuss story lines!!!

Kindle has definitely got a place, but not as the only book aboard (In my humble opinion)

Download Calibre (a freeware program) and convert to text format, then print out.
"calibre supports the conversion of many input formats to many output formats. It can convert every input format in the following list, to every output format.
Input Formats: CBZ, CBR, CBC, CHM, EPUB, FB2, HTML, LIT, LRF, MOBI, ODT, PDF, PRC, PDB, PML, RB, RTF, SNB, TCR, TXT
Output Formats: EPUB, FB2, OEB, LIT, LRF, MOBI, PDB, PML, RB, PDF, SNB, TCR, TXT"

Absolutely. My two bookshelves are stuffed full of pilot guides and manufacturers' manuals that couldn't be in any other format. But for sheer reading material the e-book format is ideal and the ease of the 3G download when something new is required makes it the way to go for me.

Incidentally, the present pricing rip-off, especially in the UK, is now under investigation by both EU and OFT, as reported here. An excerpt:
"The discrepancy has led to some electronic books costing far more than a hardback version of the same book. An Amazon Kindle electronic copy of Stephen Fry's The Fry Chronicles costs £12.99, compared to £10 for a hardback and £6.74 for a paperback."

Big rant against Amazon

Indeed. That would make anyone spit feathers.

Within EU there seems to be no problem, other than their slightly high-handed way of condescending to sell to you at all. (To add insult to injury, they insist my IoM home's in the the UK, but then so do British Airways who you'd hope had some grasp of geography.)

I've searched Amazon's site(s) at length, and the one thing that's conspicuously missing is any means of complaining, except regarding an extant order.

Have been obliged to re-register my Kindle with .com, since billing address is Belgistan.
Rant, rant, me UK passport, no connection whatever with the US- sorry, that's the rule!

Tried today to purchase a teeny MP3 file, less than £1 (UK theme, just before BBC4 shipping forecast at sparrowfart in the 60's) - UK, US, FR - none can sell MP3 outside territory. No Amazon. belgistan, so am thinking of lodging a human rights complaint with the UN.
Why can John Doe / John Smith/ Jean Dupont can buy 5 mins of music, and I can't? S'not fair (stamping foot smiley)

Oliveoyl,
I could buy it for you, burn it onto a CD, and post it to you in Belgistan, in exchange for a pack of Ricoré, which I can't even get on ebay here in the UK...

Kindle Advice

Hello all you Kindle owners!
We have just received ours here in Portugal, and we are now trying to learn how to use it.

Can anyone help with the "create new collection" option, which does not appear in the menu box (see photo)?

Cheers,

Michael.

Press 'Home'
Press 'Menu'

a menu list including 'create new collection' should drop down.
Does on mine, at any rate.
(It looks like you've selected 'Menu' from another page, inwhich case the drop down list is different.)

Note: that option probably does not work in Beligistan :)

Next poster gets a telegram from't queen.

Kindle

Thanks for your advice.
We had already tried what you suggested!
It appears that we are getting the correct sub menu, as per the left photo from the handbook, but cannot get the menu shown in the right hand photo which has the create new collection option - which we want!

Cheers,

Michael.
