Am I so out of touch???

I have always been charged travel time and accepted it as part of the bill. why would you not expect to cover their costs getting to your boat from their business address
Depends where their business address is! When trades have to come out to you it will be more expensive though, it's not like dropping your car off at a garage and look how much the car stealers charge!!!

I am recently trying to get tradesmen to do some work at home.
Getting them here to have a look at the job is challenging enough. Getting a quotation is almost impossible .Getting a written quotation does seem impossible.
I have also experienced a bad reaction when questioning prices . Its take it or leave it. They all have more work than they need so cant be bothered with a job if they sense a difficult customer.

Apropos nothing but I work in IT and I swear that the difference in hours between someone quick and someone slow is a factor of 10. We offshore loads of work and regularly see costs rise.

So I'd certainly be happier to pay a mechanic more if he can do a job quicker.

£55 p/h ?? you've got a bargain. The onsite engineers at our marina charge £60 p/h +VAT. They also charge to walk to your boat as well, so a total 10 minute walk there and back will set you back minimum half hour charge.

We need a crash to reset the market.

i loved how prior to 2008, I couldn’t get work done on our house for love or money. Come 2009, they were begging for work. What goes around comes around...

enjoy it while it lasts...?

Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it. !

I beleive in the 2nd hand car world they call them type of customer screamers, so the wise ones do not sell to them, makes life easier!

Oh it’s coming, a good friend of mine who is in corporate finance in the states has taken ALL of his clients money out of the stock market. Not if, but when and it’s a lot closer than many think.

yes Indeed...enjoy it while it lasts as it will also affect your boating costs too and could quite easily make boating unaffordable to you if the tradesmen are pushed towards reducing costs, not really a reason to smile then is it...but like you say ”enjoy it while it lasts”

I think you missed the point I was making, but hey ho, I’ll spell it out better next time I post on a thread like this...?

£55/hr for mobile marine services - is that the going rate these days ??

It surprised me as did the contractor getting very upset when I simply said in an acceptance email that the rate had made me "wince" slightly - to the point that he has now said he doesn't want to do the job in question - I didn't realise the industry could afford to be so choosy - shame for me as he was a really nice guy inspired confidence and I had already said I was going to give him the job!

Anyone know any other good Marine Electricians servicing the Severn region.
Hourly rates tend to be set by the market place. Running a business is not a philanthropic exercise, it’s endeavouring to charge as much as possible without the client running off to a cheaper rival. However, you may have an alternative. Do the work yourself! Very often it’s not rocket science and most information is easily available these days. Pay yourself £55/hr and then use that money to buy a professional’s time and attention when it may be economically viable.

£55 seems reasonable, just had my Range Rover at the independent Landrover Dealer to replace the alternator and they charged €60/hour for labour (uurloon) here in Belgium. The main LR dealer in Hasselt is around €130 /hour.
20 years ago I charged £75/hour or £600 per day + expenses as a security consultant, I took early retirement 15 years ago and glad to be out the rat race.
When I first started work I was installing Radars, sounders and radios to fishing boats for Decca Radar and I was getting £18/ week :)
