Re: Head seas bow down

/forums/images/icons/cool.gif seems silly, but the effect is still there around islands and small channels like the one between Lymington and Yarmouth. People put it down to being in the shadow of the wind, but that's only part of it.

Raggies use this all the time, even if they don't always appreciate why...When you are looking for wind, move offshore if the wind is diverging over a coastline and move inshore if it is converging.

When the wind blows across islands there will always be one side where the air is converging and one where it is diverging. By picking where to stand offshore and where to move inshore can help win races, or help get you to the pub before closing time.

Up where you are in the barren landscape north of the Watford Gap, North/South (roughly) winds will be the ones to look for, as it's wind parallel to coast that has this effect. Wind speed/direction will be different between you and Irish coast

Noises.Just add water.

Well known scientific fact that all noises become mysteriously worrying when making watery trip to new place or long way from home with wind coming up and white horses just starting to appear. This is very very normal. This effect can be duplicated when flying over water. The slightest variation in vibration or pitch demands uncomfortable momentary scan of assorted wings engine etc to check if still available for use.

Oooh look its still not dark and its nearly 5pm

Re: Head seas bow down

Dont take all this bows up and down To seriously. Lets face it, you dont even want to set off to france in more than a F4. Depends what boat you have and hope fully it's not usualy right on the nose or folowing. The trouble with putting the nose all the way up or downis, you loose speed or use more fuel. Most of the time your triming to gain speed. With mine, best is with just a slight bit of trim, down. Experiment, count to say five whilst lowering tabs. Then see what happens to speed for five minutes. Then count another five and try again. Depends how fast your trim moves I suppose! Always remember to raise the trim tabs fully when parking the boat. You do not want fowling on the rams.

Fun things to try. Might come in usefull.
Put trim on one side, hard down. The other side hard up. Boat takes on a daft angle and is quite difficult to steer!!
Handy to know because you can help steer the boat with trim tabs if an engine or steering fails.
