Alternator belt: common V type or V cogged

My Volvo 2030 comes with a cogged V type belt
Can I replace it with a common flat V tipe belt?

Use Cogged Raw Edge belts as they transmit more horse power, particularly if you have an upgraded alternator.

My Beta came with an ordinary v belt, which it regularly ate and coated the engine bay in black dust. Cogged slightly better, but they eventually offered a conversion to multi ribbed belts which are much better.

I use Gates cogged belts on my 2040, took me a while to find the correct part number but once I did they’re easy enough to find. Except, ironically at car parts shops who refuse to let you shop without a number plate these days
