The cost of VP service parts are outrageous and as I change the engine oil and need fresh lube, I wondered whether there is a cheaper alternative that would do the job. Having paid a fortune for a VP oil filter - difficult to get hold of for some reason - the costs are running away a bit.

What's the consensus?

Living near Maldon in Essex I buy 15W 40 premium grade( not the special stuff with extra additives because it is not suitable for this design of engine) oil & Perkins, Davidson or new Holland filters for fuel & oil ( depends what is cheapest at the time) for my VP 2020MD from Does at Ulting. Same thing for my CAV pre fuel filter ( Now made by Delphi). The antifreeze is cheaper too.
I just took the old filters in on a not too busy day & the chap found the equivalents. I wrote their own part Nos down in my log so when I go back they find them immediately.
If you are up near Ipswich then Colchester fuel injection may be the place to go
If you are elsewhere then someone on the forum will have a source ( such as a tractor & farm implement sales) other than Volvo

I have only once bought a Volvo-branded filter, when a bad case of diesel bug meant I'd fitted my last spare and didn't want to go back to sea without at least one more. I paid £25 to a marina-based Volvo dealer, who at least had the decency to look embarrassed at the price :). I then went back to the boat and, on my phone, ordered ten identical Fram equivalents from http://www.inlinefilters.co.uk/ for £50 total. I get my oil filters from them too.

The oil is nothing special either, anything to the API and viscosity specs in your engine manual will do fine. Most buy from Halfords or Tesco, though again I got an even better deal online.

I have just changed the oil & used this @ £10.99 delivered

After buying Volvo parts before I set off for the Med and winced at the price, I let Google help me find alternatives for just about all the bits the need replacing on a regular basis (anodes, impellers, filters, alternator belts) and found plenty of after market alternatives at a small fraction of the VP prices. Just visit one or other of the official VP parts people sites, search their parts diagrams for the VP part numbers and then google them.

ASAP supplies will source all items like filters. Google ASAP - ring them and ask them for their equivalent part numbers. Excellent bunch of people.

Oil - just make sure it is mineral oil and not synthetic, and CF-4 grade. and 15/40

Semi-synthetic! That will send cold shivers down the spines of some forumites!

Try Lidl - their 15W-40 mineral stuff sells at about £10 for 5 litres but they sell it off after a couple of weeks as cheaply as £5. It's in my local store now!

it is still CF spec & Im happy with that.
My car started of with semi then at the first service Ford changed the spec to fully synthetic.

I had a look at the 15/40 oil in Lidl but noticed that it had synthetic additives so decided to give it a miss.I will stick to the
BandQ/Tesco /Halfords stuff.

I'm not sure what you mean. Lidl are currently selling a semi-synthetic, 10W-30 I think, and a mineral 15W-40. These descriptions refer to the base component of the oil. I think all the additives to the base will be synthetic, whatever oil you buy from any supplier.

Bet your car's a lot newer than (the design of) your boat engine though :)

Not so sure i think the 1.8 tdci zetec is a Dover engine, so been about a while
No not a Dover :encouragement:

1.8 "Lynx"[edit]

The Duratorq DLD-418 is a 1.8 L (1753 cc) intercooled common rail diesel engine. It is completely unrelated to the 1.4/1.6 units, and is a development of Ford's 1.8 8v Endura-D engine that saw service through the 1980s and 1990s. However, Ford considers it part of the DLD family, as evidenced by the official "DLD" name.
The Endura-D was heavily revised and updated with a variable-vane turbocharger and a Delphi high-pressure common rail injection system and relaunched in 2001 as the 'DuraTorq TDCi', with the original engine being rebadged 'DuraTorq TDDi'.

I am using this oil http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/EXOL-SHPD...DIESEL-OIL-VDS3-APPROVED-20-LTR-/351199111854
Most of the filter manufacturers have a cross-reference section on their website where you can enter the VP part number and get the equivalent.

That looks like the stuff, but I have a couple of questions,
Is there a difference in what is needed for a turbo diesel, it is claimed to be equivalent to Volvo's VDS3 so it should be fine?
But????? they claim it is approved by Volvo, it seems barely believable that that company would approve a competitively priced product, never known them to do it before.

I can't find reference to vds3 approvals but this link shows the oil from other suppliers that meet volvo vds4 spec https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&s...KF3N_jwgRlkHDgwAQ&sig2=eLx8Xl8KqOE8VmXGM2Jqow

FWIW
When I bought my present boat it came with loads of spares (including a spare heads bowl!) among which were 4 or 5 plastic jerry cans of Volvo oil. The green containers looked vaguely familiar. Sure enough, when I peeled off the labels they had a logo moulded in the plastic... the BP logo!
