Just taken the old girl out for an overhaul and one of the mounts looks shot. Bukh obviously would like me to take out a second mortgage so any ideas on alternative mounts for this engine or should i just go with Bukh originals. Thanks in advance.

Thanks Neil. They look very similar to the ones in the boat which if i recall are called Rab. I will check tomorrow.

I used to get mine from a company called Robush (http://robush.com) and the had exactly the same part number as the BUKH originals. I remember looking at the old ones and reading off the number stamped on them. Only 2 differences, they were un-painted, not red and were about 1/4 the price of the BUKH ones.

I had the boat for about 25 years and found Robush by accident in late 80's. They still seem to be in business and have a website. I seem to remember that they sold the RAB ones I bought for use in small diesel generators.

Thanks for that I will give them a call. Have to say apart from the one mount the others still look pretty good after 19 years when the original owners re-engined. Quality mounts to last this long.

Change the lot. I got mine off ASAP supplies. £49 for 4 delivered. Check the shore rating, should be a number stamped on the Base.

Yes, I only replaced all of mine around 1987 because of a slow diesel leak which had caused 2 mounts to soften and expand. I think I replaced them again about twenty odd years later. Not bad considering the cost and certain they were identical to the red painted BUKH originals.

I have to confess I only replaced two, last time. The mounts were about ten years old and I also had a fuel leak that attacked the aft mount and a water pump leak that did for the forward one on the same side. I bought two new ones and carefully checked/compared the old and new, especially the overall height. There was no difference. So they all got a coat of paint and went back on the engine. I did the shaft alignment and the engine has been back in service for over a year, now, with no problems (well, not to do with the mounts, anyway!)

The mounts that shot is the one directly under the fuel filter very soft and compressed. Previous owners had a persistent diesel leak which they couldn't find. However after a few nips on the pipes and filter it stopped. Will replace all 4 so i know its done then and should be good for the rest of the time i will own her.

I've also found Robush very good to deal with.

Don't forget that you may well need different shims to get the alignment spot-on, and the mounts from Robush don't come with new shims. I still had plenty from the original BUKH installation, but they are trivial to make from suitable steel sheet. I am on my third set of mounts in 33 years (DV20).

I didn't have any shims on the mounts. Was looking at replacing like for like.

I would still check the alignment with the new mounts in place. If it is spot-on without any shims then of course that is great!

Maybe you have a flexible coupling? .... in which case alignment is not quite so critical, although I would still want to get it as close as possible.

Good point, I had completely forgotten about them. Oddly enough my old boat came with a pile of shims when I bought her in 1986. I wasn't even certain what they were for until I removed the old mounts and recognised the shims fitted to them. I used some spares to tweak the alignment with new mounts.

I have one to replace and I would check that the height is the same as the BUKH supplied ones and, if so, re-use the old shims.

I know that Neil had no problem mixing old and new, but could it not be that even if the new mount is the same height as the old mount without load on it, it could compress differently under the weight/movement of the engine?

To look at it another way around, do mounts never deteriorate without being either visibly damaged or reduced in unloaded height?
