Allaboard Yachtmaster Fastrack Course

Similarly a No, but I can recommend : Alfer Sea School, again in Gib.

http://www.alferseaschool.com/

A couple of years ago I did the Coastal Skipper Tidal there with Dad and brother. We were slightly unusual as we have sailed for years, but years ago, but have no formal log books etc.

They took a pragmatic view on us and our abilities.
:)

Three Passes...!

(which means ever since I have the insatiable bug to go sailing :D )

Allaboard Yachtmaster fastrack

Allabroad in Gibraltar is a chaotic school. Instucteurs have not much experience. I'd recommend a good instructor to find. Sean Furney Sail Excel (Cadiz) is truly the best I can advise you. This guy is a very good and experienced sailor and an RYA Yachtmaster examiner. He can really learn to sail and is a wonderful person to learn. The problem with most schools is that the instructors themselves are not so experienced (not as long as instructor, or even have made few miles).

I can recommend Rob & Jules at www.rusailing.com in Lagos on the Algarve. I did my YM with them in June '07, and am convinced you couldnt find better, (perhaps as good..... but not better). A few people here have used them as a result of my recommendations, and all feedback is good.

Not sure they do a specific Fast Track course, but they will do what they can to accommodate any needs.

I had a bad experience with Sean Furney, for a quietly spoken guy he can be very impatient if you don't get things right first time. It was the same for the comp crew who came with no experience. I heard RYA don't use him as an examiner anymore because he was failing so many, don't know if that's true. I later went to Alfer where my confidence was restored, am thankful I didn't give up.

Allaboard

I did a course last year with them, and they were very good. There were a number of fast track students there with them at the time who all recommended them.
My instructor was Tony who was good and knew his stuff.

Hello,
Does anyone have experience with Allaboard Sailing in Gibraltar?

No experience with them but when we were over there a couple of weeks ago. They were on the jetty teaching rope handling. So I stopped just to see how good/bad they were. I was impressed. They gave good tuition watched and encouraged untill everyone was using the correct method.
From my observations they seemd like a good crowd.

Experience with Allabroad

I have indeed had experience with Allabroad and can thoroughly recommend them. Don't know what the guy is on about when talking about inexperienced instructors. I sailed with 5 of their instructors (Tony, Alex, Oli, Martin and Trevor) and have only good things to say about all of them. They are patient while at the same time pushing and challenging you every day you sail with them.

Also from having sailed with some of the other schools mentioned Allabroad is the only one that teaches you about the broader world of sailing and working in this industry. Maintenance, provisioning, managing people and resources and how to really handle yourself, the boat and your crew if things go wrong.

Also their shorebased facilities, also based in Marina Bay, are great for the theory and other courses (VHF, Diesel, rope-work, STCW, etc). Our theory instructor Dave was simply the best.

Feel free to contact me if you want to talk to someone with first hand experience of the school and I can promise you all the other students on the same fast-track course as me would say the same.

Lex.

Sailing School

I can recommend Endeavour in Lanzarote. I used them last Easter, when my wife passed her Comp. Crew and I went through C. Skip, although no ticket for me. However, the instruction was good and the week challenging. Very windy as you would expect, but a fantastic place to sail and learn.
Give them a try, they are extremely helpful and accommodating. We are hoping to go back next Easter for another week of sail, learning opportunities and fun.
I do not have any connection, other than a very satified customer.
Fair winds,
Lancelot

Sail Training

It is fascinating to read the comments about schools and instructors.
I would have no time at all for impatient instructors. IMHO people learn from the boat with just a little helpful instruction, not by being told constantly.
I started a new course last Sunday at our local club ( I seem to have become the senior instructor for my sins) This course is for competent crew although I theorise that a person must learn all about the boat including helming to be a competent crew. Our courses are based on 4 hrs of a weekend morning (1 of theory 3 of practical) going for 5 weeks. We charge about 100squid for the course plus associate membership of the club for 12 months (about 140 squid). This course has only 7 people and we will use 2 boats each lesson. I try to get people onto different boats with different skipper practical teacher each week.
Last sun morning was glorious weather gentle breeze and not too cold. I had 2 participants on my little boat and both proved very capable of helming. So after an hour our club had 2 short races (unusual for a Sun morning). We joined the races olewill helmed the start and shared the helming to get a 2nd and a 3rd out of 8 boats. They were very thrilled. At the end of the course we try to get the participants places on boats for racing at our club. While some people are not seen again many of our course participants become regular crew or buy their own boats.

Just though t you might be interested. Not that you would want to fly across the world (Perth) and stay for 5 weeks. However next course is all of October. Just after season starts. Meanwhile we are to be trained to fit in to the RYA system though I think we will mostly stick to competent crew courses.

Although I haven't taken a course with them, I know Allabroad - instructors and staff - from the 18 months we spent at Marina Bay. My impression, gained over that time, was that they were very good.
You are right in wanting to check schools out. We did an RYA course in Gran Canaria many years ago with an instructor who was a complete **** - give a little man 'control' on a boat and they can become complete bar stewards.

Thanks for that Steve

Unfortunately Steve we don't have any records of you ever sailing with us, when was this? And we do not have any 'instucteurs' But our instructors are very experienced and Yes Allabroad is allways chaotic with all the happy cleints and successful Fastrack students who have just passed their Yachtmasters, 5 of these guys stayed on afterwards to covert to Motor, all are very happy and will be posting here soon.

If you wish to achieve YM Fastrack book with a school that offers more boats, bigger boats, you start off on 44 footers, a large dedicated shorebased facility with classrooms, Fastrack lounge and some of the most experienced instructors around, up to 3 weeks self skippering, free further training if it goes wrong on the big day and a 2 week opt out option if you are not in any way happy with your course. Allabroad Sailing Academy Is the only school in Gibraltar to offer all this and more. Thats why we are so chaotic!

Good answer Dave!!

Having sailed for 30 years or so, without a formal yachting qualification, and before I bought Rogue, (since sold), I was planning to do a course with you, as you seemed to come well recommended and had excellent facilities.

As things turned out, I found myself in Lagos for winter 06/07, and did an own boat YM prep week and exam with Rob & Jules at rusailing.com . IIRC, Rob was an instructor with you for a while, before setting up on his own, (with Jules). If Rob is the calibre of instructor that you employ, then I can say, with hand on heart, that they dont come any better - maybe as good, but not better :)
