Alistair Cooke

I shall miss 'lette from America' on my way down to the boat on a Friday night .
Usually meant there was only 1/2 hr left to drive

Probably the only broadcaster I can honestly say I'll miss. The end of an era, and a representative of a time when things were somewhat different

Incredible when you think that his first broadcast was in 1934, 70 years ago, (before "Letter from America") and to keep working until he was 95 !

Much the best broadcaster.

When I started writing a newspaper column I read and listened to as many of his "Letters" as I could, I found it excellent training.

As his biographer said on R4 at lunchtime, it was the weekly "Letter" that kept him alive, and they were obviously hard work to write - anything that looks that easy is hard work.
