It's an AIS receiver, and transponder....there isn't any "interrogation features"
Yes, I know the mode of operation. I'm querying how information is presented on transmitting targets.... whether it is in clear English, or truncated Chinglish - as some Far Eastern devices are. Further, the quality of the instruction manual or leaflet - does it similarly have 'language challenges', or is it full, complete, lucid and comprehensive?

I get the feeling you've made your mind up it's rubbish already....
I will send more details and pics as soon as possible, my initial plug in and test on bench is over and it now needs some cable pulling before it's turned back on....

No it doesn't have a fully printed manual in English and UK phone support....

0v, 12v, nmea+, nmea-, AIS aerial, GPS aerial.

thats all you need to know. If I find it's transmitting Chinese AIS nonsense to marine traffic or wherever I will let you know.

No, I AM interested. That's why I queried. I'm looking for reasons to support BUYING, not rejecting, but it is my way to ask questions before and not after..... Thanks.
 
Also very interested to hear how it performs- my receive-only Comar unit is playing up, this is not much more than a receive-only replacement.

Cool, well initial impression is very good, it looks like a quality product (the NASA Ais3 receiver it replaced just looks nasty!) box, cables, switches etc all good, decent PDF manual online in English, software in English.

Turned on, run the software connect with a serial > usb cable (£7 on amazon if you don't have one) Program MMSI and Call sign, ship dimensions etc (its all in English and very simple!)
It did throw and error first time, but I reconnected and it has updated as it should have.

Plug in the 12v, and the Aerials (that's the hardest bit mounting/routing those and I've not done that bit yet) and boom it works.

So hopefully its not spitting out a load of nonsense on the AIS band....we shall see, i dont have a spare/2nd plotter to see AIS info.....will report back when I have confirmed :cool:

It doesn't present any information - it outputs AIS NMEA sentences. You have to provide something to display what's in those sentences.
 
What does the panic button do?

Is this the same as the Onwa units? I've been tempted by them certainly.
Not the same as Onwa at all. Onwa have EU and UK full compliance, are Class B+TDMA technology and have UK approved suppliers who support the product. That the OP didn’t pay VAT is unusual and was very fortunate, recent EU changes no longer permit free entry to low priced items so the old trick of declaring a value of $10.00 to get past customs shouldn’t work now.

Normally a modern AIS will allow you to click on a target and open a window showing details about the vessel, such as name, MMSI, bearing, distance, time to closest contact, etc. Perhaps finding out about this this was the object of the question.

Get an AIS app, such as Boat Beacon, on your phone, as a means of checking it.

That's part of the display, not the Transceiver - this sends out NMEA sentences, it's up to the display how they are displayed and what features.

AIS has no interrogation facility (in the electronic engineering sense of the word). It's a broadcast, you can see what is broadcast, you can't respond to the broadcast and ask for information.

What does the panic button do?
Panic - of course.
Useful tool.
I am thinking of getting one for my spinnaker dragging in the water, Chart plotter reset , echo sounder depth alarm, autopilot stopped working alarm & my reefing jammed clutch.
They also do models for - rope round the prop, & asymetrical round the forestay as the wind gets up-- so I am thinking of getting one for that as well.
