Excellent. I ordered a jacket from them which got lost in transit by Royal Mail. They very quickly arranged to send another one out by courier, asking me if I'd mind sending the original one back using a freepost label if it eventually turned up (which it did, three weeks later).

Whats also interesting on that site is the aigle boots. I had a pair of those that lasted 15 seasons believe it or not. The gills i replaced them with ( i couldnt find aigle) lasted one season!

I bought my son the salopettes about 6 years ago for fishing use, they were amazing, just a pity he outgrew them! Totally recommended.
They were a sort of petrol blue, red piping, lined, warm.

Decathlon so looking good, don't seem to carry the coats I'm interested in in-store though. Any experience of their mail order and returns service anyone?

If you ring the store, they can sometimes get one in for you to try out.

Sign up for their Decathlon card and they extend the usual 30 day returns period to 1 year.

Aldi or Lidl, both seem good, but when are they coming back? I've had my Lidl ones for three or four years and haven't seen them since........

Also look at Tribord from Decathlon (decathlon.co.uk).

The only downside was it was in one of those rather worrying pastel pink shades that you sailors so adore.
Just a bit concerned about being propositoned as I walk past the toilets on the Quayside.

My skipper is always concerned that I remember to untie the link between my sailing wellies (handy for carrying over the shoulder, don't you know) else I would mince along while wearing them, leaving me vulnerable...

I'm in the market for a new sailing coat, for coastal use. Don't need it till early April and seem to remember seeing a few people who bought theirs from Aldi and were pleased with it. As Aldi seem to sell stuff about the same time of year, each year, I'm hoping someone's going to tell me they bought theirs in March.

Anyone have one and care to pass on a recommendation or otherwise?

If not... Any other recommendations for a decent warm coastal coat; largish size, max £150 but the cheaper the better.

Hi Steve

I e-mailed Aldi last week asking are they doing more sailing jackets and trousers and attache their reply below as they did not say no! so keep watching!

Dear Mr Newby,

Thank you for taking the time to contact us at customer services.

The Crane sailing jacket sold in our store was part of our special buys promotions so is only available at certain times throughout the year. Unfortunately we do not have release dates for items until a few weeks prior to them going on sale.

Our special buys are usually repeating every 6-12 months so would advise to keep an eye on the special buys newsletter which is available to subscribe for at www.aldi.co.uk. This newsletter will always give you prior warning to upcoming specials in our stores.

Kind regards,
Bobby George

An update..

My Decathlon CR500 jacket in 2XL (£70) arrived today via UPS. Fits well and seems to have the features of 'branded' coats in chandleries at three times the price.

Definitely recommend to others. Decathlon seem to keep a woeful range in their stores so it's difficult to get a feel for what you're ordering from a store visit. Although delivery wasn't of the old fashioned allow 28 days for delivery (remember when that was standard?) it still took them 3 days to dispatch the order. Possibly sourcing it from France for all I know. But the order did arrive inside the time they gave at time of order.

A useful thing.. They are quite happy for you to order a couple in different sizes or styles and return the unwanted via your local store.

Oh, and the size..... Leave it there shall we.

Steve

Just looked it up .

It is a waterproof casual jacket.

I made the mistake of buying a cheap XM suit for myself and a cheap Henry Lloyd suit for SWMBO when we first started. After getting caught out in a storm in july off France I went out and bought top of the range Musto Ocean jackets.

In the storm although both jackets were breathable we were wet from perspiration and overnight we were cold. Having worked a lot on building bridges etc I know that when you are cold you make bad decisions!! Just looking at the collar on the Decathlon - it doesn't go high enough. An Ocean jacket the collar wraps round your ears not your neck.

I am sure your choice is good for a summers day sailing but its not a "sailing jacket!"

Sorry, that must have looked a little rude.. I typed the pithy comment and went to look up the jacket. When I came back the message had posted and dinner was on the table .

I'm suspecting we are looking at different jackets.. Mine, although not in the musto offshore league, is definitely a sailing jacket . Decathlon say it's "short distance" and very accurately "those who want to get out more" .

The comparison I was looking at was v the Aldi sailing jacket. From what I remember of them this one compares quite well

NB.. The wife confirms ears are in the place to be expected, in line with eyes. (Handy to keep your sunglasses level) and the collar covers most of them.

Rgds

NB .. I'll update if and when I get a Scottish soaking next week!
