its a display problem
Seems to me that the real issue here is how AIS informatin is displayed. On typical yacht displays, plotting dense and mixed AIS information can result in real threats being obscured by irrelevant traffic.
This problem could be easily solved at the software level without taking a dramatic "filter out class B" approach. For example a very simple solution would be to use different colours or shapes to distinguish between vessels of different AIS class, size or speed etc.
Another potential solution would be the ability to use a non linear distance scale in order to give a clearer overview of both the close and general situation.
Just need to persuade the device manufacturers to issue suitable updates...
