AIS receive only or transponder?

I've got a hammer, but I'm going to throw it away 'cos it's rubbish at undoing bolts.

We've got loads of forks in our cutlery box, but I don't know why we bother with them, 'cos soup just falls through the gaps between the prongs.

Why is it so difficult for some people to grasp the idea that AIS is a tool that is good for some purposes, and not for others. If you find it is not appropriate for one particular job, then don't use it ("Simples"!!).

But it's a bit rich to slag off a communications system because it communicates!

There's a risk of never going anywhere because of information overload.

Last time I crossed the TSS in the channel (at night) the boat I was on only had 1 navigation light because some miserable sod had put a blown bulb back in a packet and put it in the toolbox.

If you are destined to get mown down by a supertanker it will happen anyway.

Something's gone wrong in the flux of the universe - Tim and I are in danger of agreeing

AIS is absolutely brilliant for class A signals and rendered near useless when receiving class B signals - unless you've got a mega screen or can filter out class B. see Tim we agree :)

No, we don't. And I am becoming more and more convinced that you do it deliberately.

A collision with a Class B vessel is just as undesirable as a collision with a Class A vessel.

But if you are in waters that are so crowded that AIS contacts are swamping your screen, then clearly it is the wrong tool for that particular job, and you should consider using the Mk1 Eyeball, reducing the range setting of the display, or using intelligent filtering to delete non-dangerous targets.

Here's a shocker, and no doubt this will cause Tim to scream in his sleep, but I agree with him.

As I've also mentioned before, it's a valuable tool to add to one's arsenal. It may not always be useful in every circumstance, but neither are other tools. How useful is radar in a crowded Solent on a clear day?

Rest assured Tim, I would never deliberately agree with you.
Thank you for at least having the decency to admit that it is your personal animosity towards me that is the cause of your constant disagreement, rather than any shortcomings in my arguments.

What on earth makes you think that? I can't pretend to remember every one of your posts, but I seem to recall agreeing with you (or was it vice versa?) only a few days ago.

Indeed, we're both of a similar attitude in relation to stranger snowballs.

I simply find it interesting that many people on here seem to think everyone has to be either with or against other particular people.

yup. Class b are generally non dangerous and class a its handy to know when they are coming and which course they'll take. Unfortunately the aid filtering facilities on many chart plotters are entirely unintelligent and can at most filter on range and a CPA / tcpa. This isn't very intelligent to me - infancy that's quite dum!
No. You don't want to collide with any vessel ship super tanker ferry fishing boat mootor boat yacht or even a tender. But the CPA youd be comfortable for each of these will be different - yet we can't apply that level to the display or alarm. Not helpful really.
