Hi All

My AIS was working fine last season, my boat showed up on Marine Traffic etc etc.

When the boat went back in last month it was no longer showing up. I can bring up other vessels AIS data and see them on the plotter so it is receiving ok. I just cant see my boat.

Any ideas? Its a Digital Yacht 2000 AIS unit.

The only one thing, which may or may not be related at all, is a contractor had the goalpost off the boat over winter to re fabricate it back on correctly so would have had to disconnect a few wires here and there. Other than that, no idea!

Cheers

J

I had a similar problem with my Matsutec, tried resoldering the pl259 etc without result. After a full system restore I found that the unit had 'lost' my MMSI number, supposedly impossible. Reprogrammed the MMSI, job done, no problems since.

Just because you cant see it on an internet site doesn't mean it is not transmitting.
It could mean your tranmission has not been received yet by an ais shore station or ship.

+1 internet based system very unreliable for me but I know I am transmitting because boats nearby pick me up ok and the receive only set in my house across the river from my boat gets me just fine. 2 things to think about - How far from the shore station are you? are boats nearby picking you up ok.

Fair enough I will check to see if someone can pick me up on another boat. But last year it worked all the time so weird it’s not now

I guess your transmission could be weak if the antenna cable is damaged or a connection loose.
Does your display indicate you are transmitting?

The best way to check AIS is using a program called ProAIS2
Runs on a Windows PC.
Get the correct USB drivers and the ProAIS application - usually free to download from the internet or supplied on the CD that came with the AIS Transponder.
Once connected, you can run a diagnostics section of the program.
This will show a series of ticks - if you get all the ticks, your transponder is working.

I recently had a problem with the GPS antenna that feeds to the AIS transponder.
I was able to check this out using ProAIS - one of the Tabs in ProAIS shows the GPS signal.
If you aren't getting a GPS fix, you won't send any AIS data.
In the diagnostics Tab, you will see how many AIS transmissions that you have sent.
Generally, if you are sending AIS transmissions, the system is working.

Alternatively, as said above, ask a friend with an AIS receiver to see if you are sending - don't rely on the web sites (Marinetraffic and Vesselfinder etc).

ProAIS is a great utility for checking your AIS transponder - Usually, ProAIS will have been used when the system was installed to set up your MMSI and boat criteria.

Jonathan, we’re down tomorrow night for the weekend so I can see if Bubbers can pick you up, now she’s back in the water and all nice and clean
