AIS manufacturers?

Furuno, JRC, Sperry, Saab Transpondertech, Simrad, CNS, Nauticast all produce AIS - but Class A Transponders only, so not exactly what most yachties are looking for.
Lets see what Maptech will bring out...

I spoke earlier today to a guy from Maptech/ Memory Map in UK, who said they were bringing out an AIS engine in time for Soton Boat Show. Price should be broadly on par with NASA @ c.£125 & usb based- so no probs with power & serial ports.

What's wrong with NASA??

I'm told by Raymarine that, although the NASA engine is dual frequency, it only uses one at a time and ships broadcast on both. Can anyone confirm this;- it sounds important.

Yes, this is right. The NASA engine is dual-channel multiplex receiver, thus only receiving on one channel at a time. Dual-channel parallel receivers are more expensive, but provide faster update rates, for example the Trueheading AIS RX Yacht or the Comar 200, or, if you are looking for an all-in-one solution, the SeaCas.

I would wait until the end of the year. They will release the new "active" AIS. So the big guys can see YOU also /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

We use a NASA AIS engine in the Solent area and there seem to be no problems. It sometimes takes a couple of minutes to come up with vessel names but they're not transmitted as often as the GPS data, course, speed and rate of turn.
You shouldn't be in a position to worry whether the data is one minute old or two!
