Air draught Norfolk Broads

Hi

You should have no problems with the Southern Broads which will allow you to enter at either Lowestoft or Great Yarmouth and cover Beccles, Lowestoft, Brundall, Norwich and Great Yarmouth. At a low tide you may make it under Yarmouth bridge which will give you access to some areas of the North broads, you just need to time your return trip well!

Diesel is readily available and Petrol is available on the Waveney between Lowestoft and Beccles and at Brooms in Brundall.

There are a number of free moorings along the broads availlability here is dependent on when you are visting. There are also visitor berths at places such as Waveney River Centre and Brundall Bay Marina.

If you want any specific information feel free to PM me

You should have no problem - I've cruised the Broads several times with a 12 ft air draught (probably going again this year).
The main thing to watch is the tide for passing through Great Yarmouth up to the North Broads (fixed bridges).

We are on the Broads and as others have said you will get under a lot of bridges either at low water or because they swing (e.g. Reedham, Somerleyton). Lots of free moorings.

I think it is easier to say whcih ones you won't get under:
Northern Rivers:
- Wroxham (so you can't get up tha last of the Bure to Coltishall)
- Ludham (so you can't get up the Ant)
- Potter Heigham (so the upper reaches of the Thurne are out)
- You will need to pass under the bridges at Gt Yarmouth at or near low tide and the same at Acle.
This still leaves some reasonable cruising on the northern rivers. It is very picturesque in parts but there can be a lot of hire boats.

Southern Rivers:
- Not sure but the first Beccles bridge might be a bit low but you should get under at low tide (this just gets you into the basin - there are some free moorings just before the bridge in any case)
- The second bridge at Beccles is too low (so the upper eraches of the Waveney are out with the main boat but well worth a trip up to the pub at Geldeston lock by RIB)
- Bridges at Norwich may prevent you getting all the way to the yacht station (but then it may not suit for an overnight stop anyway)
- St Olaves may be a bit low so you have to take the New Cut route to and from Breydon Water and the northern rivers (be careful here, there have been dredging and erosion prevention works in the New Cut and more than one boat has had substantial damage through hitting obstructions in the water. Best to transit at or near high water)

Enrtry to the Broads via Lowestoft and Mutford Lock (which needs to be booked and takes you into Oulton Broad) or Gt Yarmouth (bridge lifts can be booked)

Hope this helps. PM me if you have any questions

If you have a spare arm and a leg you could hire a dayboat at these locations and see what is probably the best parts of The Broads. The rest of the rivers are not a patch on these parts of the waterway. If you have a tender use it. there are some good pubs past these bridges. Beer prices are about what you will pay in London though.
