My new (to me) Moody 31 has a starboard mounted (in the cockpit) Autohelm 4000. When I first tried it it spun the boat steadily round to s/board over 100degrees before I disengaged it. This happened over and over.
Raymarine advised turning the tiny button on back from P to S. Did this but same happened but to port.
Any ideas?

Sounds like a compass problem to me.

Have you packed anything metal or magnetic close to the fluxgate ?
(Are you sailing above a seabed power cable...?)

Have you checked your fluxgate in general for correct working, e.g. following the boat through a circleand run trhough the set-up?

Once you have run through the set-up procedure (circles...) and found an acceptable deviation and aligned the heading AND this still happens: Then you have the almost typical AH4000 problem that many units experience at some stage. Raymarine recommends the rudder feedback to be installed. Interestingly though, they admit it does not cure the problem, but dampens the effect of it. The true source has not been published to my knowledge. Some models return to a good perfomance...

Incidentally, I have an Moody31 with AH 4000 Wheelpilot, too. IT showed similar pattern last year but has gone to more reliable working this season (don't ask).
