Re: The SAM

I shall comfort myself that if they're going to shoot one down they'll probably try for a big one with a high profile US or UK name on the side.

Easyjet or British Midland et al probably won't be a likely targets. Flying the flag might be a tad more risky.

Thinking about this though the chances must still be fairly low. If an aircraft leaves Heathrow every minute....

Re: Terrorist hands???? No. A screw-up.

I think you could find all the performance data on "Janes" and it's surprisingly easy to obtain anything in the weapons department, I'll tell you sometime.

Re: My brains trust

of commercial pilots agree that you'd be working very hard to throw a heavy about below 3000ft the way they are configured to land these days. They point out though that you can change speed and glide angle to reduce exposure and to increase the planes dynamic response. The trade off is passanger comfort and a more complex ATC problem. All agree that they'd rather do something than nothing in the given circumstances. They also mooted the idea that getting your engine hit by a SAM need not prove fatal to a heavy jet but this smacks of pilot optimism to me. They tell me that the industry is very aware of the threat one guy went so far as to say that this will happen in the next couple of years. None of them are looking for early retirement though.

Re: It could be done

Not only standard military transports have defences but also Air Farce One.

El Al commercial aircraft have been fitted with a spoofing system which is automatic and detects the inbound missile and causes it to go off course by means of an infra-red laser which makes it look like the aircraft is somewhere else. The pilots don't even know if a missile has been fired although it could be included in the system, they were polled and the general consensus was that they have enough to do during take-off and landing and they didn't want to know. The system costs about a million dollars per aircraft.
