Hi Folks
I’m after some advice on the do’s and dont’s of moving my boat to Spain ?
I have a 2013 Cap Camarat 755 WA with a 250hp Suzuki, currently on the South Coast in Christchurch. She doesn’t get as much use as I’d like, the time, tides and weather are rarely in sync for me. So I’m finding it increasingly hard to justify the mooring fees for the limited use it gets.
I have a holiday home in Torrevieja, Spain, I share with my brother, and I’m seriously considering moving the boat out there. For anyone that knows the area possibly to Cabo Roig Marina. I think I’ll get better use of the boat and more quality time on-board in Spain than I have been getting in the UK.
However I have my reservations hence this post. I have a good trailer so would tow the boat down myself. The boats copper coated, I’m assuming that’s a good thing ? She has a blue hull so I expect it to oxidise, but I’m hoping there’s ways to limit that. Luckily I have friends out there to keep an eye on it, and it would get more regular use as my brother is out there as often as I am.
It seems a no brainer, if things don’t work out I’ll tow it back to the UK, but I’d really appreciate a reality check. I will of course apply for my ICC. Any advice or Marina recommendations before I make a final decision would be much appreciated. Bearing in mind I’m not at all familiar with boating along that Coastline. What might I not be considering, or need to take into account ?

i bet it will be fab! No tides and lots of summer days flat calm, med is mobo central. I would make sure brother chips in a lot with mooring fees and maintenance costs. Also if it’s a bit massive maybe get someone else to drag it there. Also consider “dry sailing” if under say 34feet so it doesn’t get crusty underneath and slow - they chuck it in when you use it. You can zip over to Ibiza from there. Or marina san carles not far has a nice bay, lots of nice brits and mostly drunks. Finally make sure your boat is equipped to spec- loons in powerboats kill a fair few people each year so regs include the safety gear, icc, and saying yessir to guardia civile or anyone else with a gun

agree with T21. We have a smaller cap camarat that we use when we want In Altea. We’ve just had it recovered after a week in the water, enjoying warm sunny weather in mid December is fab, Certainly won’t be doing that back home in the UK.
also keeping the boat on a trailer with a decent cover protects it well from the sun. A quick polish every now and again keeps it looking like new.

No idea of the current brexit plan but you may want to get it into the eu pre 31 jan. given we are leaving with a “deal” maybe transition makes it all ok but just something to look into as opposed to finding out when you want to do it there are duty or other implications.

And maybe get a T2L stamped by HMRC before 31st Jan 2020.

The way I see it -
The T2L is part of the import documentation (a single page) that you would get if you import a "good" into Europe.
It provides an element of proof that the boat is an "EU Good" with all taxes paid.
At the moment, HMRC will authenticate a T2L but after the UK leaves the EU, HMRC will no longer be able to provide that certification.
The process is completely free - just the cost of a self addressed stamped envelope.
It is a "no brainer" worth doing IMHO
There are some threads on here about T2Ls but if you have any questions just ask on this thread.

A T2L probably won't help though if you have a boat in the UK at Brexit day.
But I can't see how anyone would know after you had transferred it into Spain.

What I mean is:-
There are the Temporary Import rules that will apply after Brexit anyway.
This means that you will always be able to take a boat into the EU for 18 months.
After that, who would know that it had been in the UK at Brexit time - and the T2L would then help.

I will probably get flamed for saying this but thats what I would do.
Get a T2l anyway - it won't do any harm.

as above, excellent idea. Will you have somewhere to keep the trailer away from the marina? Cabo Roig is not very big with little storage space. Don't worry too much about hull oxidation. The boats are so close together only the stern quarters get exposed to the sun. Just give those bits a polish a few times over the summer. The copper coat will work OK - you may need to pull the boat out for a jet wash later on in the summer. The fuzzies are very aggressive in the med.
documents wise - ICC, VHF license, Registration (SSR is fine) Bill of Sale, insurance. A VAT receipt would be nice, also passports for everyone too these days.
safety kit - enough lifejackets, VHF, flares and/or an EPIRB.
You can get pretty much any work done at a very good price just up the coast in Torrevieja harbour.

We're at Torrevieja and often chug down to Cabo Roig bay. It's a nice spot for swimming. Best bits of keeping a boat down there: mainly deep water and no tides, so just check the wind and go. Most days are dry and sunny, so you can plan to go whenever flights are cheap and be relatively sure of a good time. (We were last out there end November and it was 25 degrees.) The wine is good and cheap, most Spanish people are very friendly.
Don't forget that you'll have to get used to the horrors of stern-to mooring. There's not so much health and safety as in the UK (no rescue ladders or lifebuoys on our pontoon and you'll need to be able to get on to your boat from the stern which isn't easy if you are at all "refreshed"))
Cabo Roig is small but a bit lacking in night life. OTOH, Torrevieja night clubs can be noisy until 4.00 am!

yes Dennis is still going, although he has been fighting a tough battle with skin cancer these last few years. He is very stoic about it and still working hard. But everytime I see him there is a bit less of him. He still remembers doing Jenny Wren and Co though.
Sadly its very sobering and I hope he pulls through.
So boys and girls don't skimp on that suntan oil, and use a bimini in the med

Thanks for the suggestions and sound advice, its all good the hear. I'll be applying for a T2L, better safe than sorry, plus registering on the SSR. As much as it might pay to move the boat out there before Brexit, I haven't the time. I'm looking into getting a ferry to Santander and the towing regs in Spain. The boats got a 2.54 mtr beam which might be just over the legal limit, I've got to research it more.

Appreciate the T2L advice and the explanation, I was unaware of them.

The plan is to keep the boat afloat. I have a trailer but it may well have to come back to the UK, I don't really want to store it at the house in Spain, it would be a tight fit and no room for anything else. Kit wise I'm ok, just need to apply for my ICC.

Hi we were at Cabo roig with out Monterey 275, moved down to torrevieja in salainas marina. Excellent place to boat and as people said weather normally good Some lovely coast lines around Good mechanics in Cabo. Both English and Spanish. Also torre, nearest fuel at Cabo is across the bay to Campoamor
