Advice on \"Bonding\" sought

My 2001 Nimbus 280 has just been lifted for it,s annual antifoul, and the yard have advised that the prop needs replacing as it has severe corosion and that the first 10mm of the threaded shaft tube has also suffered from the same corosion. New anodes have been fitted each year, and I am advised by the yard that the boat should have been "bonded" from new. I have been informed by Nimbus that bonding is an optional extra. I do not have shorepower plugged in at it's berth in Dart Marina. Has the lack of bonding caused the corosion?

Yes almost certainly. Never heard of bonding being an optional extra, more an essential!! Otherwise what's the point of having any anodes at all, unless they are shaft anodes.

When you say anodes replaced, do you mean the small one screwed on the end of the shaft and the trim tab anodes? I have had 2 Nimbus boats and neither had any anodes on the hull bonded in the "normal" way. I fitted them myself to my Nimbus 345 and asked for them to be fitted on my Nimbus 370. I could not beleive that the small shaft anode was anywhere near good enough.
I do not understand why they do not fit "proper" anodes from new.
I live in Kingswear and I think I have seen your boat here in Darthaven Marina, PM me if you want to meet and swap notes.

Thats really unbelievable. Nimbus boats are well known in the UK and you would think that the importer would have hull anodes bonded to the shafts fitted as standard if the manufacturer didnt fit them. Its essential if you're going to keep the boat berthed in-water

Hi and what a familiar tale this is. Bonding is a vexed issue that surfaces a lot. Anodes that are hull mounted require bonding to the anodes and metal parts they protect. If shaft mounted they "bond" to the shaft. So if no wiring exists between the parts and anodes the answer is possible yes. Regards John payne http://www.fishingandboats.com/forum.html
