I've just sanded back to what I think is a previous coat of anti foul, there are a lot of small places where it has gone back to the gel coat, do I need to treat these areas before applying anti foul?

I bought some Promocom paint (I think that is what it is called) to prime the cast iron keel, could I use this, alternatively I do have epoxy.

I don't really want to have to do anything to them as I want to get on with antifouling.

As you have the Primocon you might as well use it to prime the bare patches. It's what is recommended for priming bare GRP

See the relevant data sheets on International yachtpaint's website

My wife reacts badly to epoxy.

How did you get her to stay still long enough to paint her ;)

No, it's not an epoxy.

If you're not sure what the previous antifoul was it is probably worth while using Primocon on the entire hull before repainting with antifoul. It is a good binding coat between different antifouls which do not always take to one another.

As said use the primocon all over as it is also a 'barrier coat' ie if you are not sure of the original make of antifoul use the primer.

I always use primocon primer before any coats of antifoul and find it lasts longer, currently using Joton Seaqueen antifoul, lasts 'two years' 'in' no problem.

Remember most epoxy paints are a 'two pack' paint, primocon is a one pack paint.
You can put a 'one pack paint onto a two pack paint, BUT, you can not put a two pack paint onto a one pack paint!

Next time try Jotun Silverguard 88 primer, just as good as the primocon but half the cost and twice as much for £29.94 http://www.smlmarinepaints.co.uk/primers/single_pack/vinyguard-silvergrey-88
