Admiralty V Imray

I prefer the Admiralty charts myself, partly because thats what I learnt to use from the first but also prefer the colours and the type of paper. Personally I find the Imray paper not so good for plotting on.
If you have a PC you can download the Admiralty chart catalogue to help you decide what charts you might need.

I would also suggest getting Memory-Maps

You can buy complete set of charts on a CD for whole of UK for £30 which is a bargain or download for £25 for PC or tablet. I find it very good

> I worked for over 30 years in making maps, and I know how easily error creeps in!

The Venezuelan mainland is half a nautical mile out and the out islands are three quarters of a nautical mile out. We were anchored on one side of an out island and the GPS said were were on the other side. Another island out is Klein Curacao. The problem is people believe their GPS/chartplotter at night, the windard island of the out islands has many yachts and coasters on the reef. Klein Curacao has fewer because it is smaller and a yacht hit it the night before the night we passed north of it heading to the west coast of Curacao. Part of the problem is most of the land nav lights in that area are not maintained so don't work. Some Greek islands are also out but most don't go night sailing.

I have had memory map charts on computer for years, useful and interesting. My main complaint is it seems impossible to get adjacent charts open together which makes planning more difficult.

the Imray ones are printed on waterproof paper.

Annoyingly, the latest editions of the 2000-series packs are no longer waterproof, merely reasonably high-quality ordinary paper. I don't know if this is going to spread throughout the catalogue, but it's a retrograde step in my opinion. I don't generally take the charts into the cockpit, but I do sometimes drip on them while leaning over the chart table.

(And another forumite, he knows who he is, once accidentally peed on my C12 Eastern Channel! :D)

Thank you all for the great advice. Now a lot more informed I ordered and received yesterday a selection of Imray charts from Portsmouth to the West Country with a harbour chart for Poole. Many thanks.

My personal preference is for Admiralty charts (and Memory-Map) but probably the best adjunct to south coast sailing is The Shell Channel Pilot. We have had it on board for near 40 years in various editions and we still refer to it regularly when leaving the Solent (east or west).
Enjoy your new horizons...

You could get both. I generally prefer Imray folio sets but get Admiralty for harbour approaches. However, I have all Admiralty charts for UK on my tablet (less than £20 from Visit my Harbour) with Marine Navigator app. so where I have Imray coverage I can also compare with Admiralty (and with Garmin G2 on plotter but I generally don't like using vector charts so much).

hi - anyone printing off specific charts using memory-map - what size / type of paper / type/make of printer works best - can you choose any specific part of any chart for printing and if you aim to print a centre section what about detailed lat and long scales? thanks for any advice !
