Hi I was looking at the same advert today.

I was not aware they did a model with the 73p 430hp engines, I know and have worked on onw with the 63p engines in and they go very well, also makes me think back to the days when I went after a Princess 406 riviera which was a 40ft shaft drive model produced in very small numbers, the layout with the main bed off to the stb side must have put people off but had an excellent ensuite side cabin with 2 side by side beds and full head room from tip to toe over the entire beds.

I still sometimes wish id bought it, in fact it went to Norway in the end, it had a pair of cat 355s and did an easy 32 knots.

This V40 should do more, again not many were produced in shaft form as the price was high and performance and mpg lower than the sterndrive versions.

Id say the price in sterling isnt too bad compared to a Fairline targa 43, though you dont get the garage, 2nd loo, and sun pad, though you do get more seating.
Id like to have seen a nice dinghy crane or passarelle on it, though im venturing now when ive sold my Princess 410 fly towards a hardtop/slide roof sports next time.

Thank you for replying Volvo Paul:)
I am in the market for a boat like that mostly because the shafts.. i had to many Sterndrive boats... but i am not afraid of them just a little tired of constantly service and replace parts compaired with shafts..:)

I have also looked at the 406.. but they are rare.. its one up for sale here in norway..: nice boat: http://www.finn.no/finn/boat/used/object?finnkode=23150903

Is it only me or is the market in UK a little dry at the moment? Have all the boats went outside uk?? its not many boats up for sale actually..

I do think the performance in the V40 with 73P engines will be very good.. and it does have the right colurs inside.... hmmm i must think about it a while..;)

Welcome to the forum Norwegian !!!

Cannot help you with the boat in question, but as a fellow Norwegian, I thought it appropriate to welcome you!!

Uansett, lykke til !!... og hvis du trenger litt hjelp vedrørende meglere, hva som er vanlig her borte osv., så bare spør... (Vi reiste ut fra Norge in 1990 og har hatt Storbritania som base i mer enn 15 år..)

Mvh

Alf

I believe that european VAT tax cannot be reclaimed and you have to pay an importation tax as well?

A lot of boats from here in the Channel Islands go to Norway because we are Tax free.

There may be some Fairline 47 sports boats around ?

Hi Divemaster:D Its Thorlyn from båtplassen;)
I know Divemaster from the Norwegian forum baatplassen..
As you know Divemaster its not the first time iam bying boats in UK;)

Norsk: jeg fant jo ut at her inne er det mye godt stoff også;)

Bandit.. You are right here in Norway we have 25% VAT on used boat from EU + HP TaX on over £15 on each HP:eek:
My first boat from Europe a P286 i did get from Guernsey.. But often the price isnt so mutch lower in Channel islands actually.

Just bare with me if my spelling isnt 100%;)

But what about the market?? is it little boats out there for the moment?

Hi Volvo Paul. I saw that.. This one has Volvos in it. But nice boat..

I saw a 406 i Greece with new Cats i 2004 and 9Kw genny up for sale.. extended plattform to. british flag.

I think i wil use the winter to find me a good boat.. I must be ready before next summer..

One question.. I have seen several nice boats up for sale in scotland on the west coast.. Is it possible to take a boat by water from west to east coast easy? any limits regarding beam and height on waterways?
Its a quite long journey all the way around...

OK .. benefits for keeping the same nick ... velkommen Thorlyn !!

Yup .. loads of good information in here and good advice ... as you should be used to at båtplassen.no

Think you'll find that as maket slows down with the season, there will be less options out there.. Try to have a look outside the UK ... as an example .. http://www.boats-diffusion.com ( a P 46 Rivieria out there... )

Thanks Divemaster:) Stupid of me not keeping my ordinary nick:o I dont think i can change it either??

Thanks to all for the warm welcome in here:):)

I have been reading in here for some time and as all forums i learn things every day:)

What do you think of a Portofino 400 with TAMD 63's? Another boat with shaftdrive/sterndrive option. This one is from 1996. It has a bit noisy exhaust system but it drives very well, much better then the ones with sterndrives!

Being Norwegion why dont u look at Windy 43 Typhoon. It is a boat built for a shaft not made as an after thought....

I was looking at Princess V40 with inboards Volvo 63s 370hp in 2008 located in Italy and asking price was 120000 EUs from 1997 with VAT paid. Fully EU specs gen, passarelle, A/C etc etc

Thanks for advices:)

120 000 eur starting for a v40 seems like a nice price.. i have read some test and they all says that V40 with shafts and sunbed shall be around 15K less on the price of sterndrive boats without sunbed. in first sight i belive that the 1998 ho is up for sale i UK is to high on price.
The Sunseeker portofino is nice i think.. good hulls and seakeeping.. where is that on picture up for sale?

The Windy Thypoon is the ultimate boat.. but they are hard to find and wery high price.. but build quality, seakeeping etc is hard to beat.. not many boats ho are doing 40knots on shafts.

I dont like very much how the Portofino 400 rides on shafts to be honest. To much bow high, and gives a few bumps as the hull length is reduced. The bow will go down once you top speed at 28 knots onwards. At following sea as any Sunseeker she rides very well. The engines are positioned aft and those tunnel props make it hard to get it up on plane like 18 knots. Then the sterndrive version felt light and a bit bumpy.
The V40 drags too much water IMO with shafts and is a bit better with sterndrives.

The shaft versions for both will always be a bit better seakeeper, due to the sticky nature of the propulsion but will always be like an extra of 50% more at the station. As a bonus you will get less maintenance which is like minus 500 EUROS a year (cost of work, bellows, zincs). You will get this with a couple refills I am sure.

If you want shafts I would look deep into a 44 Camargue, better layout and while she is no speed demon and no special seaboat at least she was built for the propulsion.

I have the Portofino 400 with 2 x 425hp CAT's on shafts and it is the best boat I've ever had. Shafts and a bowthruster make it so much easier to manouver than my previous sterndrives.

The ride is brilliant, it is a very heavy boat for its size and you always feel safe and I've never found the ride to be bad, in fact exactly the opposite.

I don't agree with the getting up on the plane bit either. The boat gets up on the plane effortlessly, I reckon I'm up on the plane before 18knots and I never muck about with trim tabs, they are always in the fully down position.

All in all, I know Sunseeker come in for a bit of bashing on here, perhaps for the blingy new models, but the Portofino 400, I don't think is blingy, its just a good solid boat for reasonable money.

The Portofino 400 isn't for sale... yet. If you are interested, send me a mail please.

It's true, with the heavy 63's it's a bit nose-up without trimtabs (in normal, tabs-up position) but it is a very "big" boat, more than a V40 IMHO.

Yes that is how the helmsman drive it with tabs in. But with tabs down it felt dragging too much water. The nose starting getting better at 25 knots up. I remember we managed 30 knots max at the time, and planning speed was 19 knots. The skipper told me that best economic cruise was 22/23 knots at 2300 rpm.
She is in fact a bigger boat to a V40 and if she is not she surely feels that way. I think LOA is more, as is beam.
