Achilles 24 fin keel

Hi all. Wanting to know current values for said yacht. I've an opportunity to buy one for £1000 and apparently the only thing needing done is to redo the interior which I've no issue with. As I'd want it to be near pristine condition I would most likely be re-newing deck fittings etc, really whatever needs done. I haven't viewed it yet and the seller says he's taking a £2000 hit on it. Hull has been painted and thers no engine.

Really wanting to know how much it would sell for if it was tidied up and in good order. I see people asking £2000 and others £5000 but how much are people actually buying them for as we all know the asking price can be a lot more than what they actually get.

I paid around £5000 for my triple keel (in top condition) in 2009 (with new engine, dinghy, tiller pilot etc included) but prices have fallen since then - I can certainly believe if the seller of the one you are looking at says he's taking a £2k loss from what he paid. There's certainly some going for around £1000 +/- but they seem to be pretty old and tired. Owners who have good ones tend to hold onto them as they're great boats if you can live with the small interior, so the best rarely come onto the market and its difficult to know what they would raise.

A couple up my way(Firth of Clyde) sold last year.One with good road trailer for£1700 and another fin keel went for about £2000.Both looked in okay condition

You need to be certain that the interior is the only issue. As said some are in superb condition and some are dogs. The hull paint may be entirely innocent. Just a way to smarten up some tired gelcoat. Or it could hide some repairs.
I bought a boat with a disgusting interior, but as I only daysail I did nothing with it. I sold it in the same condition.

If you are looking at this as a way to make a few quid I fear you may have missed the boat (see what I did there?)

On a cheap boat the cost of cushion foam or other cosmetic enhancements could be a major proportion of the purchase price.
You need to really assess everything (standing rigging, tackle, running rigging, especially sails).

In the current market a 24' fin keeler that is not in the area a buyer is wanting to sail has a heavy premium on transport. It's pretty unlikely most buyers would have the means to move it, even if it had a trailer.

In short. Most unlikely you could turn it around for a profit. On the other hand it could make a nice, cheap and pretty boat to sail yourself.

This one on Windermere was a beauty and was for sale for about £3K

Personally thinking £1000 is a bit on the pricy site. May be ok if someone wanted to do it up to keep but for me to buy, fix & sell I can't see there being much profit (if any). Inside is totally gutted (empty) and no trailer. He says its worth £2500 (whys it being sold for £1000) so going by that what's there should by in excellent condition. Think ill pass on it unless price is dropped.

Yep, I agree- don't think a profit could be made but would suit to fix and keep myself. Have recently had a notion of yacht but I've too many boat projects on at the minute I wouldn't want to be lying out £1000 on another one. Mite offer £500 odd in a week or too if it's not sold. Transport would be an issue but I've access to a hi-ab lorry but a trailer would have to be made. Here the pics of her

Run away. You've been told it's OK? Half the rubbing strake on the side we can see is missing. Very fresh paint job, nice finish but poor detailing. Run.

What should I be looking out for if I view it? I read something about a balsa core? Is this the hull or deck or maby I'm mistaken. If so what's the best way to check to see if its sound or water-logged?

http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?245409-Achilles-24&p=2600317#post2600317 I would still be wary. if you are doing a paint job and know you are going to replace the rubbing strake, why on earth leave the old bits on when doing the paint job. That means you are risking damaging the new paint when removing the old strake.
And they left the outboard bracket on. No big deal, but I would prefer an unbroken paint film, replacing the bracket later.

To add to (and perhaps paraphrase) what others have said:

1. An Achilles 24 is a great boat. As a days ailed or weekender I think they are amazing and I would have the triple keeled version in a flash if I was looking for something of that order.

2. To get any boat- ANY boat- to pristine condition is always going to cost more than a pristine example of that boat is worth. Not a problem if you want the boat. Big problem if you are thinking of tart and turn.

As ever with boats you pays your money and takes your choices.

If I do go for it I'll do it up to a good standard that I'd b happy with and keep it a while. Im off Thursday and Friday so might have a look at it then if it's still there.
