A statement from Wightlink Ferries read: "As part of the usual disembarkation process, after vehicles on the lower deck had left the ship, the starboard forward mezzanine deck with nine cars on board was lowered.

There appears to be at least 10 cars on the ramp, anything to do with the accident ?

The mezzanine deck is hinged, the forward section was lowered. I think this is where the 9 vehicles comes from. (9 on the bit being lowered)
The rear half of the mezzanine deck holds more vehicles which is what can also be seen in the photos on the BBC web site.

A cable break certainly should not result in an uncontrolled descent; poor maintenance is most likely, although incorrect design or fabrication is possible. The MAIB will make interesting reading, as will HSE.
