sorry I'm sure this has been done a thousand times but need info on decent accessible (by tender) beaches within easy reach of Calshot... Wiggo introduced us to Colwell Bay which is about a 10 mile run West and we use it fairly regularly.

Are there any decent beaches closer than Colwell Bay going West and what about heading East, any there worth a look? The marina said there are decent beaches this side of Ryde but looking at the charts, there's Ryde sands to catch us out access wise, right?

We've also bobbed about in Osborne Bay a few times but as I understand it. there's not much opportunity to get the tender out and hit the beaches there.

Any ideas welcomed... the reason for the questions is we're having a few guests on board the next 3 weekends and I'm currently looking at tidal streams etc to work out what the most comfortable direction would be at a given time of day.. this would suggest I need a decent beach or two in either direction to avoid heading in to the wind in a wind over tide scenario just to make the guests feel they 'need' to get off the boat and on to the beach, dreading the return journey..

Hope you can help:cool:

A good beach is Priory Beach just west of Bembridge. Bit past Ryde sands but you will be able to anchor fairly close in but watch the tides as it dries out quite a way back from the beach. Also at full tide the beach gets a bit thin!!!
It's nice and sandy so great for swimming and also barbie's and also sheltered from the South Westerlies in the summer time.

Give it a visit, you won't be disappointed.

is that it? surely there's other places to anchor up and find a decent beach within a few miles of Cowes?

Not really a beach, but you can anchor in Newtown Creek and take the dinghy ashore to the western side of the entrance (not the eastern side, it's a wildlife sanctuary). It's a popular spot for barbeques and can be very busy, as you probably know, but a beautiful spot.

Going east, there are fabulous beaches at East Head/West Wittering but that's probably a bit further than you want to go?

That's it, nothing worth bothering with on the island side at all between Ryde and Colwell apart from the small beach at Gurnard. Beyond Colwell you have Totland then it is Compton round the back then nothing again until Ventnor and then Shanklin and Sandown.

Yep, Priory Bay is great, but..
1 you can get teenagers in ribs buzzing about
2. a few metres of water at low tide is about a kilometre offshore
3.there is a sandbank about 300 metres off the high line water in the middle of the beach- not fun if you run aground, but great fun for paddling on the low water.
4. at low water you can get a mini tsunami from passing cargo ships..I havent seen a boat at anchor rolled, but it sometimes looks close!
5.watch Ryde sands, or you will beached there waiting for the tide ;)

So, catch the tide coming in, and motor as far is as you can (ribs get onto the beach), and anchor. On a falling tide, either stay on the boat and watch that water, or berth a long way out. A few hundred metres off, and you can be only up to your ankles!
Once you've seen it at low tide, you will get the picture!

Make sure you go around Benbridge ledge to get to it. Very nice beach.

And East Head just inside Chichester harbour.

Another vote for Whitecliffe, nice little cafe / ice cream shop.

Alum bay at the other end is quite nice too but a big climb up the cliff to get to the shops, unless you fancy the chair lift.
