How would your insurance stand if you deliberately sunk the boat?

[/ QUOTE ]

Obviously it depends on the specific policy cover, but when the vessel is abandoned one in an ocean, underwriters are going to assume that the vessel have been lost. If the skipper has decided on the basis of the information available to him that the safest thing to do is scuttle her then so be it... but some policies may have a more specific clause.

Re: Lassooing the pulpit? You\'re pulling my chain, aren\'t you?

Think i would have tried to board her and get the engine going think of the adventure I am a marine engineer would of enjoyed that challenge!

That was a Legend doing the ARC about three years ago wasnt it? Talked to the insurance Co via Sat phone.

I wonder if that was an hour after he bought the policy via the same phone and a credit card?!

That's fine if you want to wait until monday morning before entering the life raft... oh and don't ask before ten on monday as I am in a bad mood until the third coffee has hit home.

with my luck I would get through on the sat phone just in time to hear "All our customer advisers are busy at the moment ,we value you as a customer so please call again later" /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Sorry Tango, but this Bacardi fuelled airhead stands by his comments above.
And dont worry, I shall endeavour to ensure that I escape OK when I crash into the abandoned yacht in mid Atlantic that is lurking, waiting for me.......

I was merely pointing out that the odds of hitting an abandoned yacht in mid Atlantic are very slight - but then so are the odds of many other happenings that can kill you. And the odds of hitting a container or a tree trunk (both of which will generally cause far more damage) are much better, simply because of the sheer number of them out there.

By the way, I cannot stand Bacardi - vile stuff IMO - if one must drink rum, then at least drink the proper stuff, like Mount Gay or Cockspur.

May well have opened the sea cocks ----- If its a saddler it wouldn't sink would it ?? Come to that why did they abandon an unsinkable yacht???

Why does anyone abandon a boat?

Safest place in a storm is your boat - barring a fire or actually sinking, I'm never, ever abandoning the boat.
I've found myself inside a liferaft in "lively" conditions - it was only training, and only 6 hours - but it has taught me that I would abandon the boat as a last resort only.

Anyone remember the documentary on the telly on the 1979 Fastnet? Followed Grimalkin close up. IIRC they abandoned to the liferaft and loss of life ensued. After the storm they found the boat still afloat.

Nick, it was full of gold and diamonds plundered from the Spanish main. Everyone is now hotfooting it to the area
