Easy to say from here... but it was also being rolled 360deg apparently, and if a nice warm, safe warship turned up, and offered a ride, I for one would get off pretty darn sharpish.... ask Richard Woods about it.... he made much the same decision....
Also, I guess most boats wouldn't sink just by opening the sea cock alone. Ours won't. You'd need to remove or cut some pipework. I just can't imagine doing that in conditions where we were abandoning ship and safety of life paramount.
Yes im sure we all agree with u it's best to take a deep breath dive into the saloon and swim to the seacocks, open them and then make your way back through the floating debris of sleeping bags, spare rope etc. and then abandon ship. I'm thinking of taking the Hoover with me in case it happens so we can run round and leave the place tidy before going itno the liferaft.
Yeah, it's a 32, we sailed many miles in ours around the English Channel and Biscay. We always admired the way she looked after us through some pretty rough stuff. Horrible and eerie to see a boat like that.
The boats been rolled, you're all in shock and rescue is at hand. All the seacocks are already open anyways
So you need to start disconnecting the hoses. Screwdriver to undo the jubilees, then wrestle the hoses off? No way without heat. So go for the hacksaw and cut the hoses, hang on where's the hacksaw gone...
I just wonder if there is an element of emotion involved, heh! There must be! YOUR boat, rolled! Smashed and you have to leave her to the elements, after all the work, the time you spent together, the way she has looked after you up til now, your long term sailing plans cancelled!
But now you are going to be safe, taken off, taken to safety. Oh! One last thing, you have to sink your beloved boat! No! I dont think so, could you? /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
Tome, thats pretty much what I was thinking..... however, i've also just realised that undoing just one wingnut would see the sea strainer open, and she'd have been filling..... albeit slowly... made me gulp a little!
Could always pull out the log ... or just knife through a convenient pipe (you do all have a knife to hand don't you?!)
Not sure I could do it though... it was bad enough having to sink my mirror as a buoyancy test during a junior week (bit daft as I never capsised the thing!!).... took ages to bail out.
Hee Hee.... i'd be busy trying to collect up my precious stainless steel screws, nuts and bolts collection, as well as ensuring that my forum burgee was safely recovered.....
Not to mention the spare crimp terminals which you've collected over many years, and the handy laptop supply whilst the missus is gathering the cuddly toys and her favourite eyeliner and collection of buttons. No way would I leave without my woopy cushion
Wot? Not one mention of a bottle? Personally it wouldn't worry me ... but having seen you lot in France earlier this year.... /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
I think I'd have beenn tempted to throw a grapnel/spar on a rope/weight on a string through the pulpit to get a tow and set off, see what happens.
Have to say, though, your decision is the right one, (possible injury or damage, far from shore etc) as you are the skipper. ('Skipper may not always be right, but he's always the skipper' my old granny used to say.)
