I've just got some from CPC Farnell. They are Pro Elec brand which I've had before and are good quality. They worked out at 35.9p each if you get 40. Compares well with high street price.

I try to always use rechargeable.
Same here. With one of these >

Voltage a bit low with NI-MH but with spare batts always charged not a problem. Doesn't take long to pay for itself with a load of torch use plus never be stuck with drained batteries. Slowly going over to 18650's

I always used to but in recent years there has been an explosion in the number of devices that take AA and AAA. With good batteries being available in bulk at <50p each it hardly seems worth the effort these days. It is all too easy to kill a NiCad/NiMH by misusing it so I suspect there is not much difference in effective cost.

I probably have more than 100 AA cells in use in my house at any time, and get through maybe 50 a year

I use a lot of rechargeables in model yacht racing. My experience is that he Duracell ones are the best. Although nominally 1.2v when they are charged the readings on the built in voltmeters on the RC units show 5.7/5.8 which is for four AA batteries. After a days racing they show 5.2/5.3 and still seem
to have plenty left in them. The Duracell ones have lasted years. I am saving the planet as I charge them when getting electricity from our solar panels.

How?

I've had a few lose capacity with old age...
They can be damaged by excessive charging, leaving them discharged for a long period, or repeated charging when not fully discharged (so called memory effect). NiMH are said to be better than NiCad.

For example I have cordless telephone handsets with rechargable batteries and they fail regularly. Those are either left constantly in the base station (trickle charging I presume) or left lying around the house to go flat.

Not a problem then :)

Good charger, NiMH don't have a memory effect , don't leave them for months discharged. Easy.

Does anyone still buy NiCad? Eneloops are great :)

I bought a pack of 40 from Toolstation for about a tenner.
I have a cheapish Fuji zoom camera which only seems to like alkaline AAs.
When they're done in the camera, my one-AA LED torches still run on them for hours.
