A warning for the boat show

It should not be necessary to use the word "spas" in the context of your own technological ineptitude. Don't make excuses for your ill-judged, offensive, and very outdated use of the word. It matters not a whit whether you yourself have a disability, and it certainly does not give you licence to use it.

judging before you know me is not to good either as i am disabled. so ask before you judge which is always a good way to go !!!!!
Why on earth would anyone ask first whether you were disabled before making a post suggesting the word spaz was derogatory? it is derogatory, especially in the context you used it and yourself being disabled is irrelevant.

Cheers, Brian.

Definition:

One who is considered clumsy or inept.

Considered offensive slang, however i am not offended by it but find the OP guilty of both charges in relevance to their post!!

It is in general a bad idea to demonise particular words, rather than the attitudes which may underlie their use. There is a tendency for the derogatory connotations to be transferred to the new sanitised word, members of the stigmatised group may wish to reclaim it (“queer” is an example), and people with inadequate linguistic understanding may persecute paediatricians or proscribe the use of “niggardly”.

This post is stuffed full of discriminatory, pejorative and racist wurds - e.g. connotations, stigmatised, linguistic, persecute - and I report you forthwith to them wot won't understand a wurd of it but will ban you anyway.

So there....

I've been called a spaz by someone with cerebral palsy; should I be offended?

Oh bugger - another for the ignore list! how I loath those who "play the disabled card" as an excuse for their actions as if it gives them some special right to be a plonker. Best of all is they then expect some form of sympathy.

I personally think that "he" as somebody with a disability (although that wasn't known at the time of the post) doesn't find the word offensive or demeaning to him or others.

Lets get back to the squitters thread eh !

I'm more interested in finding out if the poor food preparation is being dealt with rather that ostracizing one of the forum for a moments lapse in courtesy.

Tom

Well said that man.

I have sympathy for your problem with food poisoning, but very little for your choice of a such a derogatory word.

I do wish people would judge the context that words are used instead of becoming the self elected forum word police/judge/jury.

Too much PC these days

Signed (father of a disabled daughter) roger

I reported the issue to Southampton Environmental Health Service yesterday. This morning I had a telephone call from them asking supplementary questions. They confirmed that they had received seven other complaints about food purchased from the same stand on Monday. They appeared to be taking the issue seriously and said they would be visiting the stand today.

They dont hang about do they

It is not what you say it is the way you say it that is offensive. There is nothing wrong with the word spastic in fact there used to be a spastics society, it is the shortening to the word spaz and its use as a derogatory remark that causes great offence.

The Spastic Society changed there name to "Scope" because of the associations the former name was linked with

That was a near miss on my part, I looked at that roast pork on Sunday and thought about it but declined because it looked only just warm rather than hot.

I will be back at the show this afternoon, and will report back.

I'm going to the show (again) on Saturday, if the hog roast is still available I'll test it out on SWMBO first before eating my own. How long will I need to wait before the results start show?

Cheers, Brian.

I had a hotdog, onions and mustard with a can of fanta, I was fine.

FWIW, I think the OP did well to alert people and I suspect the OP had no intention of offending anyone or implying anything derogatory about anyone. Unfortunate choice of word, but part of lifes rich tapestry
