Re: Welsh windbag\'s World Wanderings

I've been to Croatia and had a great time. It's relatively undeveloped compared to the rest of the Med. Lots of space and superb scenery, the Kornati Islands are like nowhere else. The place is oozing with history as well, the Roman stuff in Split puts UK examples to shame.

The food that you can get in Restaurants is fine but not much variety. The shops are not as well stocked as would be typical in the EU, but the street markets are fun and seem to be where locals buy their food.

We had a real variety of winds over 2 weeks, from nothing to F7. There wasn't a single day when we did not sail some of the time.

There are no beaches to speak of. The coast is rocky and depths generally drop away steeply.

Despite their problems 10 years ago, we got the impression that it is a safe and well run country which welcomes foreign visitors. For example, tap water is safe to drink, which is unusual for Med countries, but goes to show that they have a pretty good infrastructure.

Watch out for the salty bottled water. It's a bit strange.

Language gap..

Initially I found the thought of joint chartering 'Mirabella' fascinating . Especially when I realised that all 100 lucky crew could bring their own special skills to the trip. This would of course have meant that TB and I could have sipped cocktails and barked senseless orders at anyone daft enough to listen.

On reflection though I have to decline as i have no wish to attend a pre-charter language course to understand what Jimi and Claymore are talking aboot...

Re: sailing Turkish waters

Have to agree with Jimi wholeheartedly, Turkey is a great place to sail, eat, shop and meet fabulous people. I lived and worked there for 5 yrs all along the southern coast from Bodrum to Antalya, whichever marina you start off from there are good bays and ports of call with a lot of history along the way thrown in as well.
Eating out is cheap and go for the genuine 'Turkish' restaurants (read no 'chips' on the menu) only when the English arrived 1987+ did they start serving chips - which until that time were considered an insult to be served to guests - but the brits kept insisting.
Buying food is an experience at the local markets and everything tastes as it did years ago. One of the best cuisines in the world.
Go to an Hamam and get a bath before you go on board, you will be massaged to hell and back, covered in soap suds, dead skin scrubbed off, feeling like a fish on a marble slab but come out feeling a million dollars, and it really gets your tan a healthy start.

It's an amazing country well worth a visit and don't be put off by others.

Re: Turkey

FWIW

I've found Sunsail pretty good abroad.

The end of May/start of June is great. Not too hot and before the worst of the Meltemi kicks in. You also get a boat near the start of the season before it gets too 'tired'.

Jimi

Thanks, picked up the brochure today. Will phone up tomorrow to see if they have any boats fitted out with mod-cons for idiots... loads of Turkish destinations though. Looks like April may be good. .. now can I fit in BVI before then...?

Looks OK.
