I'm looking for a simple solution for carrying water in my tiny cabin. I don't really have room for a fixed tap so I'm looking for some kind of jerry can with a manual pump tap type lid attachment? Kind of like a Whale Mk6 but attached to the lid of the jerry can.

Lots of water carriers have gravity feed taps but that would require mounting the can on top of a locker. I'm looking for something that could be kept in a locker or on the cabin sole but still get water from it. Any ideas?

Buy a jerry can and and whale mk6, drill hole in jerry can cap, and attach whale pump... It's what they do on Cornish crabbers... http://www.cornishcrabbers.co.uk/in...ails/product_id/39/water-container-and-pump/-

I have a Whale Mk 6 but fitted at the side of the galley sink and connected to a small flexible water tank in the bow.

It replaces the old Mk 5 Whale which leaked practically from day 1 and could not be serviced in any way.
I am not optimistic that the Mk 6 wont leak before long but at least if it does it can be overhauled.

I am not over the moon on these whale pumps. Even if the new one does not leak they are too expensive.

If it is fitted into the top of a jerry can and leaks it will be PITA. At least any leakage from mine drains into the sink and then out from there.

I keep a couple of 1 gallon water carriers on the cabin floor with fresh water in them for drinking, normally using the tank water only for domestic purposes.

How about using one of those large garden sprays? Pressurise once and get the water at the push of a button. They come in lots of sizes.

Thanks Giblets, I had a vague memory of that from KTL but could find it... I've ordered one now :) and I'll have a go with it.

I like the Crabber way of doing it but I could do it myself for less than £47

The garden spray thing has good potential - a hand presurised sytem for small boats could be pretty useful? Some development needed...

At some point I may well end up with a fixed system like Vic, at the moment I am still deciding what I want and where. Leaky taps sound awkward - It's likely my sink will double as the chart table with a board on top :(

For drinking water, we just use 2litre bottles of cheapo mineral water, and refill them when cruising.
It's easy to put a couple of empties in a rucksack every time you go ashore.
But the old sonatas had whale pumps fitted in jerrycan lids IIRC. Worked fine, they had secure stowage next to the sink.

They're very effective. Good at reducing water consumption on long trips. And they make good fire extinguishers, too!

I'm thinking of using a whale gusher (already on board) with a plastic water tank as used in offices situated below in a locker.

Cornish crabbers will sell you what you are looking for as per standard on Shrimpers. Works well for me!
