A salutary lesson

If I understand the article correctly it seems that the first guy fell overboard and the the second was trying to get him back on-board while the boat was still underway. Surely even someone with no boat knowledge could see that this is a bad idea. We all know that saying, you can't fix stupid

You have to think, if the captain was pizzed...then the passenger, who probably never thought he would have to take the helm, was properly pizzed

I’d go further and say he was definitely pizzed as well but there is a bigger lesson in that you need to make sure (as Captain) that your number 2 actually has some clue about to do in the event of an ‘issue’ where El Capitan is no longer able to make decisions. I have been on many boats where the Captain has been very reluctant to share any information with any interested parties .

Good point...I seldom take out strangers but when I do I let them have a well supervised go at the helm...and my regular number two (who outranks me on land) is well qualified and knows what to do in every situation

We seem to have a group of 4 in the same marina with similar-ish boats so if we go out together (on one boat) then we’re pretty well covered but when I’m out with family/non-experienced people then I’m very keen to explain the ‘emergency red button’ on the VHF and how the engines start/stop etc. As well as the obvious jackets etc etc

Absolute negligence, I don't buy the excuse that the No.2 was trying to rescue No.1, if the boat was still under way, he would have soon been too far away. The first thing he should have done is shut down the engine(s), or at least put them in neutral, or perhaps he was executing a perfect Williamson turn yeah right. I always show guests how to shut down the engines in an emergency - No.2 knows but you never know.

He could easily have killed someone, sobering thought Grrrrrr he should get 3 months.

No 1 starts to fall in while checking to exhaust, so no 2 grabbed him and they both fall in.
A strange but believable tale. You can not check the exhaust with the engine stopped.

As for the booze it is not uncommon in the UK to have a drink on board. We don't know the blood alcohol level. So how drunk were they at the time?

Shitfaced it appears.
Not necessarily. Roy could manage all that after being on the wagon for a week. And its not like he could tell you anything about operating the boat either. He relies on his admirable ❤ to tell him what to do.

???? Does your exhaust not work then with engines running in neutral and boat stopped? No excuse, utter negligence, and if any third party had been seriously injured, I doubt any judge would accept your argument(s)....!

I was only quoting from the article for those that appeared to have not read it.
I was not offering any opinions.

The article stated 'While enroute back to shore, the driver of the vessel had leaned over the side of the boat to check the exhaust when he lost his balance and fell overboard. His companion saw this happen and had made an attempt to save him causing him to fall overboard also.' Either way reads very dodgy to me.

If you're underway and driving the boat, how can you expect to lean over and see the exhaust unless you left the helm? If he saw/heard an alarm, surely he would have throttled back, rather than lean overboard, unless well p!ssed. My point is simply that IMO they were both seriously negligent, and could have easily killed people, I am glad they survived the boat can be repaired, But I hope they are dealt with accordingly. ☹
