A long cruise - Spain - France - Corsica - loads of photos

Well, whenever you know in advance that digital piccies could/should be touched up for some serious usage, nothing can beat RAW format.
But surely a 7mb file has much more juice in it than any web pic.
Anyway, I guess that Viewfinder knows all the tricks I know, and then some...
...but even if you're just curious to compare what both of us come up with, happy to play with it a bit. :)

PS: I would have agreed with the thoughts on swim ladder and transom door, but with the OB.
As it is, it has more of a "still life" style, which I like, but imho that fits better with as less details as possible.

Chaps, I think the right thing to do here is to give VF a chance to comment on the pic in question before we start editing it on her behalf. She's away in the bitter north until the end of the week so I daresay she'll be along soon enough, once she's got back.

Cheers

fantastic trip and report, really enjoyed it!
can I ask what program / plotter / software you used to put the track on the map ?

Very simple, really.
It's just Memory Map running on a PC with a GPS feed - £50 for software plus charts (Say £100) and you can get a GPS dongle from Amazon for about £15.

My setup is a little more complex - a PC built in with video fed throughout the boat but the concept is low cost.

I just leave it running and it provides a graphical log and an alternative nav system. Quite useful in Corsica where some of the Navionics data differs from the paper charts. Memory Map uses raster charts scanned from the paper ones.

On this trip, I started using OpenCPN in parallel with Memory Map but Memory Map's display is so fast that I eventually gave up and just went back to MM. My copy of MM is well out of date - the newer versions have hi dependancy on the internet so I dont intend upgrading - hence the interest in OpenCPN as an alternative.

So, it seems that the old copy of Memory Map lives on - no need to replace something that works that well. In fact all those long passages were set up as routes using MM and uploading into the main Raymarine G Series systems.

But imho, what would be more important to complement the lovely framing is some more saturation. And depending on what's in the original file, that might be easy to adjust/improve.
I can give it a try if you wish, just email me the file.

Funny, the same thought crossed my mind as i was looking at the pic and i was about to post the same suggestion.

I can just read mrs. Viewfinders thoughts with two over enthusiastic amateurs wanting to edit her photos... :D

Absolutely fantastic photos all the same!

Thats interesting 'cos I have exactly the same set up too - Its a very cheap standby too by chartplotter costs.

I like the raster charts - frankly prefer these to the navionics / C map charts.

One thing that is annoying with MM is the slow effort in producing tide data - year after year I have had to beg of updates that generally have come by Easter - this year they are only now available for the S Coast and now cost £20 + p&p which makes the always in date Navionics app look a steal at £15.

:D Yes but in fairness to VF those pics are not her final product. They are just rough shrunken jpegs stuck up on this forum for quick entertainment and VF would fully agree they can be improved by computer work and would be very able to do that (if only she had the time!).

Mike, if I remember correctly, you have scanned your Med charts and referenced them using the Memory Map software. Is that correct or have I got that wrong? I cant be bothered to do that myself not least because the local Croatian charts I have are not that good. Do you know if Memory Map or any other supplier sell electronic Med charts for use with their software. Can't find anything on the Memory Map website

Marvellous trip, stunning locations and fab photos.

All very inspiriational to me as I count down the years to an early (I hope) retirement when I hope to have enough €€€ and time for some Med boating.

Yes, Mike - I (sort of) scanned my latest BA charts and then georeferenced them but my main set of charts that I use in Memory Map comes from a package that I bought from Memory Map about 3 years ago. The funny brown Cosrica ones come from that package. I think I paid £100 for the whole of the Med - including Croatia. But I've been waiting for an upgrade that they have been promising for early this year. I've phoned/emailed them several times and they have promised that they will be out soon. I've just checked the website and it seems that they have let us down and are not going to do them. The Memory Map UK site implies that I should go to the Maptech US site and they, indeed, have the charts but it isnt clear if they are any more up to date than the ones I have. I might giv then a call - if only to have a moan (Victor Meldrew style) - I Cant Bieleeeeve it!!!

So, its back to my dubious (kind of) scanning - I've done all I need for our end of the Med anyway.

I too am an enthusiastic amateur, and beginner when it comes to this forum. Happy for you to have a play with the image although not sure how to get it to you so PM me if you have any ideas.

In the meantime, I have made a very small change to the saturation and had a go at posting it here. If it works I will post some more of my favourites. If not, any tips on how to add photos gratefully received!

H

Oooer, that's well saturated! Dya reckon you can make the black wedge under the swim platform into a rectangle, so the list to port doesn't appear?

For posting in here the best way is upload pics to photobucket, set the setting to 640 or 750 pix wide so P'bucket stores them only at that resolution, then when composing a post on this forum type in {img}url of picture{/img} only using SQUARE not CURLY brackets, and the picture will appear in the post. Better still, if you tick the picture(s) in p'bucket, and then select "create IMG code" (or something like that) p'bucket will automatically create for you a copy-able block of text with all the text typed in, to make it dead easy.

I've put a pic below. Click "quote" as if you were quote replying to this post, and see the text that will appear, to see what I mean. BTW, do you recognise the location of the pic?

Apart from all that, hiya!

Very quick 'correction' :)

Cheers, that was great seeing as i was up early with nothing but quiet things to do!. Great boat but just out of interest how much did that trip cost in fuel?

Thanks Viewfinder but it's ok, I feel embarassed enough already poking my nose into other people's photos :o.

But since I started it, I made a few trials on the pic posted by jfm to see what happens :D

Works ok in black and white too, imho.

Thanks for the picture posting advice jfm and 'hiya' to you too!

Here are a few of my favourites to be added to many of those already posted. Not all boat-related (sorry!) and not all expert compositions, but effective at capturing some of the moments of this fabulous trip...
