Next week I hope to sail to Lowestoft or Great Yarmouth to enter the Norfolk Broads for a couple of days.

Travelling from Bradwell on the Blackwater I plan a stop somewhere in the Orwell first but then need another stop or two before Lowestoft. There seems to be only Aldeburgh or Southwold. Does anybody know if these places are visitor friendly or are there other choices?

Southwold, one of my favourite quaint unspoilt harbours, visitors moorings onto staging. Enter on the flood and not into N to E thru S in strong winds. Follow instructions in Almanac.

Lowestoft is no problem but entrance can get lively on the ebb or WOT. Entry to the broads is under a lifting road bridge to Lake Lothing and then through railway bridge and Mutford Lock.

Great Yarmouth entrance is very lively on a strong SE and on the ebb. You can stop on Town Hall quay but no facilities and quite dangerous up metal ladders with fast running tidal streams from 3 rivers flowing under Haven Bridge.

Suggest you look at or <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.thegreenbook.org.uk/home/home.asp>HERE for info on Bridge heights.

You do realise you've jinxed yourself a North Easter by claiming you're going to broad reach all the way...........

One extra instruction for Southwold - take a long strong rope. Berthed there you'll need it on the ebb!

Trouble with Southwold is you take the ebb north from the Orwell so you arrive at Southwold at low water. I did it a few weeks back. Why not carry on to Lowestoft which you can enter at any state of tide. The tidal stream up the coast is quite fast even at neaps so you can do Orwell to Lowestoft easily on one tide. Call at Southwold on the way back.

The trouble is that to leave Harwich on the ebb on Sunday it will be either too early or too late. If I leave at 7.00 or 8.00 I might be passing Southwold on the flood and can stop to avoid too much punching against tide to Lowestoft.

Tide for Harwich Sunday, 22 August 2004

04:25 3.6m
10:11 0.8m
16:37 3.7m
22:44 0.5m
