Once upon a time, a Grumpy Old Thames Boater decided to buy a new boat (well, not a NEW new boat but a boat...well. you know what I mean).
Now this new boat was really quite a handsome little craft except that it had wooden doors which extended right across the rear of the cabin which someone who owned the boat before GOTB had not really cared for very well. In fact, they had splodged some nasty gunky stuff all over them and they looked really horrid.
So GOTB decided this really would not do and the doors should be given a really nice makeover, but, try as he might, he could not find anyone really interested in restoring them to their original finery.
Then, one day, he remembered the little boatyard just down the river that repaired and cared for truly old wooden craft and, one Saturday, having established that the nice man at the boatyard was happy to help, GOTB took the doors off the boat and delivered them to the little boatyard.
The nice man said he thought they should 'come up a treat' and that it would take two weeks so GOTB left with a happy heart (although he didn't really believe the two weeks bit, if truth be told!).
Anyway, when the two weeks was almost up, GOTB called the nice man at the little boatyard who said "Yes, they are almost ready and they have come up a treat. You will be very pleased as underneath the gungy stuff was some really nice teak".
And so it came to pass that this morning, just two weeks to the day, the nice man brought the doors back to the boat and helped GOTB to re-fit them and very nice they look too.
There, isn't that a nice story ?
Oh, and just to add to the story, the diesel heater is now working and the signwriter has finished applying the new names - thers a real danger I might actually have to use the damn thing before much longer
