Am weatherbound in Woolverstone Marina on the Orwell, getting gusts of Gale 8 at the moment, and is currently choppier on a pontoon than it was at sea over the weekend.

The boats are surging about a bit - if anyone has a boat here at Woolverstone and wants me to keep an eye on her while this gale holds out, let me know. I need something to do!!!

Cheers,

It's down to about a 6 here now, going from 15 to 25kts. I think the 8 I registered on my handheld anamometer was probably an isolated occurence, (and it's only a cheap one anyway, so could be incorrect) but at least one boat has parted a line in the marina.

Dover Harbour was interesting. Coastguard got a reading of 38 kn while we were out.

At least crew now know how reef the main.

No-one else out. I wonder why....................

F pontoon?

Woolverstone use F pontoon as their visitor's pontoon. In a Northwester the fetch down the Orwell can create quite a sea on F. I've been there when three boats broke their mooring warps, with one of them pitching so much that the hull was coming down on to the pontoon.

If you are visiting Woolverstone and a NW wind is forecast, then it's worth asking for an inside berth if they have one available.

What wind direction did you have?

I put my boat on the club pontoon today to lower the mast check the rigging and fix the tricolor lamp.

Got the mast down and let the bow blow off the pontoon a bit so the top end of the horizontal mast would be over the pontoon.

30knot gusts causing the boat to move about a bit and theres me shuffling about the pontoon with a screwdriver trying to remake the electrical connections. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gifGot there in the end.A bit like playing darts when drunk .

hope your not weatherbound too long.

Re: F pontoon?

Yes, you guessed it - N/NW!! It's about a 5 this morning, same direction I would guess from the motion of the boat, but seeing as I haven't yet ventured out, I can't say for sure.

They always seem to put us inside on E pontoon - something to do with our bowsprit, I suspect, although we always get the same berth. Most people don't like it, because there is a whacking great pile at the end of it, but we can sneak our bowsprit alongside the pile and then rig two bow lines to keep her nose straight.

Clearly the way to stop piles being a pain in the a**e...
