I live near Cogolin in the south of France and would enjoy having the use of a boat, but I have been put off so far by not knowing how to go about it and what would be involved (licence?, mooring, maintenance etc.) Looking at various websites has only left me more confused!

As background, I am thinking about a motor boat that will seat up to 8 people for day use, with the possibility of accommodating 2, or perhaps 4, for a night or two. I am not looking to become an enthusiast for the details of boating – I would just want to do enough to enjoy being on the water.

Here are some of the things I am wondering about

-Do you need a different sort of boat for close-to-shore cruising compared to one that might be used only on a river or lake or will any boat with the above accommodation be OK?
-Is there a good site for beginners, so I can narrow down the sort of boat that might suit me and get an idea of costs?
-Is it best for the boat if it is taken out of the water when not in use and during the winter? I see a lot of boats here are left in during the winter and I suppose the mooring is paid for anyway for the whole year.
-Would I need to get a licence to use the boat?
-Does anyone have advice about finding a mooring at Port Cogolin or nearby?
