My next door neighbour was sailing in the middle of the Blackwater one day, and bat landed on his deck, and he asks "Has anybody had this happen to them?"
Yes, we motored out to the Varne before the wind filled in and we unfurled the main, a pissed off bat then appeared and flew around the boat for a few minutes before pushing off, no doubt to a watery death...sad emoticon.
We had a bat land on the boat in the middle of the North Sea a couple of years ago. I figured it came from a container / cargo ship. It landed exhausted and crawled into a tiny recess in the genoa car track end. Some time before we reached shore it flew off.
Yes, in the Thames Estuary in broad daylight. It flew onto the windward side of the mainsail and hung on to a horizontal seam. Stayed for about 2 minutes.
Not in Europe AFAIK, but the blood sucking vampire bats in S America, could and I believe do, however they mainly predate on cattle and similar large animals.
A wildlife officer (of some sort) was bitten by a Daubenton's Bat some years ago in Dundee I think. He contracted rabies from it and died - like everyone does from it - horribly.
Very very unlikely though. You'd have to be really unlucky and it wouldn't worry me.
"Sadly, in 2002 a batworker from Scotland died from EBLV, which is why BCT takes a precautionary approach and advises that anyone who is bitten by a bat obtains advice from his/her GP."
And this gem:
"Can I kill the bat if it bites me?
No. Bats are legally protected, and it is an offence to kill a bat. Contain the bat if possible and contact the Bat Helpline on 0345 1300 228 for advice on what to do with it. Your bat worker or vet will need to assess the bat."
