I'm in the process of fitting a wind generator the handbook states the cable should be 8or10 awg.
I visited Maplins today intending to buy some cable and found the staff most unhelpful in assisting me to convert awg to metric.

Can anyone suggest what the equivalent Cable is? I have looked on google but to be honest it didn't make much sense to me!

Many thanks

8AWG is apparently 8.36mm^2. 10AWG is 5.26mm^2.

Cable comes in certain sizes; I don't think 8mm^2 is common, so your choice is 6mm^2 or 10mm^2. Go for the fatter one if you have a long run, the 6mm will do if it's short.

For a wind generator where the cable presumably goes above decks I would insist on tinned cable, which Maplin probably won't sell (and if they do, the price will be horrendous). I've always had good service from http://www.iem-services.co.uk/

Try these:
6mm: http://www.iem-services.co.uk/showdetails.asp?id=1081
10mm: http://www.iem-services.co.uk/showdetails.asp?id=1082

These are single cables; twin-core is not common in these sizes. You'll need to buy the appropriate length of black and of red.

And I doubt whether you will get tinned cable at Maplin.

It's really worth doing the job properly.

There is 8mm twin tinned available. Try google.

And fill the crimps with silicone grease.

Best

Not

The only place to get your cable or an understanding of how to approach wiring questions, but using the Merlin site for guidance is very helpful to is. Here is their cable selection guide with part numbers and approximate x section.

My only other suggestion is to ensure you devote as much time to your connections as selection of cable!
