we have a great weekend at brightlingsea but on our way back got out of the 8knt limit and went to open it up and strbd engine would only get up to 2000 revs, cant feel the tubo kicking in like the other engine
i have noticed over the last few trips that the strbd engine turbo it about 4 or 5 seconds later to come in than the port engine.
could this just be adjustment ?
would i be right in thinking i need a new turbo ?
how much would you guess this would cost ?

many thanks
steve

would recommend brightlingsea... fantastic weekend, moored in the marina, very friendly and will be going back again soon... we hope...

Take off the airfilter and you can see the inlet blades of the turbo, check for free rotation and try to wiggle the nut in the center to see if there is any play both radially and axially, its normal to feel a very tiny amount of slack but if its in millimetres then it has worn bearings. I would also suggest undoing the exhaust bend and doing the same checks on the exhaust turbine as I once had a turbo that had a broken shaft so the turbine went round but not the impellor.
Also check the wastegate to make sure its not stuck open thereby dumping the exhaust gases before they go through the turbo. Its 3 allen screws holding the wastegate valve on and you can inspect the valve and test the diaphragm with an airline, but don't use full pressure to see if the valve moves.
If the turbo is ok then maybe its not boosting because there isn't enough fuel being burnt as boost is a direct result of exhaust gas pressure, so check your fuel filters and that the engine is getting full throttle at the pump.
Before you start was the engine smoking? as if there are clouds of black smoke you don't have a fuel supply problem, you have a lack of air problem which points to the turbo, if the exhaust was normal then that would indicate lack of fuel.

I cannot add anymore than spannerman other than I had the hose from the turbo to the inlet manifold blow off as the clips had broken, thus dumping the boost into thin air.

Id go for wastgate tho.

We had exactly the same problem when we bought our boat and it was picked up during sea trials. It was the turbo wastegate valve. The Volvo dealer who was doing the engine survey removed it and did whatever he had to do in the workshop. Apparently it wasn't big job and it was put back on. The fault was fixed and two years later remains fixed.

I had the same problem on my F43...

All it was in the end was some loose clips around the air intake to the turbo.. Thought it was going to cost me 00000's but a friend of mine who looks after my boat sorted it in a couple of mins with a good size screwdriver!

I gues vibration caused it to loosen up.

Regards,

Garry
