6 hp Mariner 4stroke carb

can i remove the blanking plug from the pilot screw on myMariner 6hp 4stroke, its the only one i cant get at . i have to clean the carb after a dunking in silty sea water. It will run if i spray fuel in the carb but stops when i stop.

If the motor has been is the sea, I would remove, wash and clean anything and everything possible. The carb will have had sea water in it and the tiny jets and tubes may well be already coroded/blocked. Best thing is to strip it and carefully check all the holes etc are clear with copper wire.

If there is a blanking plug over a pilot screw it can usually be removed, they are usually to stop folk adjusting the mixture to keep within emission rules.
Many bikes have them (often usa imports) and most barb jet kits have a drill and self tapper in them for the task of removing the blanks, if you are going to remove the pilot screw count the number of turns till gently seated first so you can put it back how it was.

I did this and had to use the care of a brain surgeon as the plug was 1/4" thick! I was successful but you can see where I overdrilled into the screw.

When I was able to adjust it I still couldn't eliminate the slight hesitation when blipping the throttle so I purchased a new carb. The Chinese clones are so cheap at wasn't worth messing about and it works perfectly.

it was in the sea one full tide, iwill ultrasonic clean and inspect again. Thanks for the reply.
