Good afternoon all,

Now starting to start planning a delivery trip in Mid to late August and are thinking of selecting an East Coast journey to Scotland for having a good vantage point for a North Sea crossing to SW Norway at a later stage.

We will be setting off from Chichester, or nearby (not quite certain just yet), but current broad outline is:

Nab Head - Ramsgate - 112 Nm
Ramsgate - Gt Yarmouth - 79 Nm
Gt Yarmouth - Tynemouth - 183 Nm
Tynemouth - Peterhead - 160 Nm

Of course we have some thoughts on secondary ports as well, but would like to know if anyone in here have any experiences of these ports (know MBY did Ramsgate recently) and similar journeys up the East Coast. Of course we are hoping for good weather, no mechanical problems and to complete the journey in 4 - 5 days without too much stressing. If going gets too tough, we'd re-schedule and do the job over a couple week-ends.

The boat is a 45 Ft. MOBO, cruising comfortably at 17 - 20 K & topping 24 @ WOT. in a planning hull, with an effective fuel range of approx 300 Nm, with 20% reserve at 18 K.

Re: who yer calling Nabhead

is Nabhead like the Nab Tower? or is it a bit ruder?

Ramsgate - okay for fishn'chippies and nice club house up on the promenade. Good shelter, but a bit broken. Be fair, MBY can't say jeez, what a dump bout any marina can they? Mind you, it would be worth a shot, hehe. Gt yarmouth, another bit of a dump really. Tynemouth and peterhead, not been. Bound to be alright in that they will have fuel, but bound to be a bit rubbish on account of being in the uk.

Delivery trip, turn the engines on, wham along all night provided eng temp okay and radar works, next day get fuel at Gt yarmouth and crash for a few hours, then off towards peterhead.

Mind you, if i was going to sth Norway, i wd bimble across to holland and denmark, so no nasty North Sea crossing, perhaps?

What is the boat air draft? and depth?

If sea is rough you could get in at Niewport in Belgium and go up through canals? we did it last year and loved it !

No worries about big waves and bars on every lifting bridge !

Re: who yer calling Nabhead

Great Yarmouth has no Marina facilities, it is a commercial port. Moor up against the town quay with ladders to climb, strong tidal streams.

Lowestoft, Royal Norfolk & Suffolk YC has diesel, showers, food etc.

<What is the boat air draft? and depth?>

Air draft with radar arch = approx 5.5 M
Depth = 1.5 M

But not really an alternative route ... Will use winter in PH to tidy up & install various upgrades. plus want to visit Orkneys and Shetland...

Re: who yer calling Nabhead

Thanks TCM...

Not looking for "Pretty"..... just to re-fuel good and efficient (shelter wd be nice as well of course)... wanted first stop to re-check engines etc., and to confirm fuel consumption ... hence not too long..(getting the "true" figures from another 500 Nm journey which is to start on Saturday, but nice to confirm).... then onto next stop.....or jump to Tynemouth. As mentioned in other, using PH for upgrades during the winter + want to visit Orkneys etc...

Not alternative route really (above)... Denmark (Esbjerg, Hvide Sande, Tyborøen, Kiel, Brunsbuttle Copenhagen etc.... have done all that and got the medal, so want different route ... and having the boat based in Scotland for a while (may sound strange ... I know .... but is cheap..when considering alternatives). Besides that North Sea Crossing is sort of more of a milestone to achieve .isn't it ??..(then other route back perhaps)...

There are details of the East coast ports I visited when I sailed round UK here...

http://www.xrayted.fsnet.co.uk

Ramsgate is fine.

Great Yarmouth will not make you welcome and there are few small boat facilities. Go to Lowestoft instead.

There are places to stop on the Humber, Hull and Grimsby, both tide limited, but welcoming.

Big marina at Hartlepool.

There is little in Tynemouth, you need to go further up the Tyne a few miles. Big marina on the North side. There is also Amble and Blyth a bit further up the coast.

Peterhead also fine, a small marina in a busy commercial port.

One day, I want to be a real sailor. In the mean time I'll just keep tri-ing.

Ramsgate, fine, useful choice for what you propose.

I'd swap Gt Yarmouth for Lowestoft, not much mileage in it but Lowestoft has the kindlier facilities for leisure boats these days.

By Tynemouth you mean River Tyne? I've stayed at both the Royal Quays Marina (modern, secure but a bit out of town) and St Peters Marina (seemed okay there, walking distance to the delights of Newcastle). A run up the Tyne is fascinating, both to observe what was and what is left there.

If you needed to stop a bit further south Hartlepool handy; Whitby less friendly to leisure boats but worth an overnight if for nothing else than to walk up to the Abbey and get confused as to where to buy your fish and chips.

I'd also be tempted to call at Amble Marina, fantastic location, laid-back atmosphere. Farne Is not far away.

Firth of Forth wonderful for a nose around although the only major marina, Port Edgar, not everyone's cup of tea -- it's military roots still obvious and quite exposed in some winds.

Peterhead has a surprisingly good leisure marina for what most to assume to be an outright commercial harbour. It's located right in the corner of the harbour, about as far away from the huge trawlers and rig support boats as you can get. A very worthwhile stay esp for that SW Norway crossing and the harbourmaster there was very helpful to me when I discovered that I was missing a grease gun among a tool kit that was already threatening to sink the boat.

If you have some time to kill up there head around the corner to Inverness Firth and pay Lossiemouth a visit. Orkney tantalisingly close too...never made it myself, sadly.

Bit rubbish

Bit rubbish cause in UK

About time you got that superyacht of yours off the Sunsail moorings and into some real interesting stuff up country eh? Can supply you with an itinerary you wouldn't forget in a hurry. What's your air draught and can we remove anything if needs be to squeeze in a bit?

ps leaving hose on foredeck bad form eh? Or is it a hint that you want passing oooglers like me to do the honours?

Norway

Out of interest when are you thinking about going over to Norway? Trying to cook up a scam to take a boat over there possibly next year, just starting to look at alternatives.

Trawler yacht with long range so we have the shorter options (Scotland) to consider or the longer leg options (Lowestoft or even Ramsgate / Dover direct).

Mind you, owner wants to get well into midnight sun territory one day so SW Norway from the UK seems quite a short hop compared to getting to the northern areas!

<.... is this the CM45 with the GM's?>

Yup ... that's the one .... nice discussions between me, the broker and owner .... think we achieved a win-win situation, but not divulging too much, until I have the boat underway ...

<Could meet you in Lowestoft if you stop there>

Sounds like everyone thinks Lowestoft is the best place for stopover then (in prefrence to Gt Yarmouth).... so if all goes well, that will be our first overnight stay ... of course we could meet there, would be great !! ... will post more as the date of departure approaches.

Thanks Kim...

Have family in NCL, so will be Royal Quays for a day ... or more pending weather...

Will du Whitby, Farnhead etc., as we have been there by road and will be great to see from the sea.

Located in ABZ, so intend to leave in PH marina and cruise Caledonian Canal, West Scotland and over and above to Orkneys etc., next springtime.

<Out of interest when are you thinking about going over to Norway? Trying to cook up a scam to take a boat over there possibly next year, just starting to look at alternatives.>

Planning to cross over at some stage Jun / July 2005 and will soon start to gather route information and information on Standby vessels and platforms with listening watch in our path .... Have not decided on route yet, but want a relatively short passage.

This would not be for "Northern Exposure" ? could make sense to move to Scotland this autumn as mooring are relatively cheap up here.. then make the crossing to North of Stavanger ... moving up past Bergen and the exposed Stadt area, before moving up towards Ålesund. Some fantastic cruising areas over there which I have had the pleasure to do myself many times and what we want to do again... For longer stays, if that is what the owner (Malcolm ???) wants to do, and leave the boat in Norway over winter, there are some "strange" rules that applies... I'd be happy to help if I can. I should have access to most Northern North Sea Plaforms contact information, listening channels, standby vessel - platform communication channels etc., amongst relatively good knowledge of the Norwegian coastline you will be entering...

Re: Norway

Tomsø .... nice place .... Have family living below the bridge (South) on the side with the Cathedral. also have family roots in Båtsfjord and Svolvær..... have cruised up there many, many years ago and will go back one year. Have done the country, Kirkenes in North to Oslo at the South East by sea. My upbringing and "home waters" are on the South West round Stavanger.
