I'm looking to get my small generator serviced and have been given a quote of around eight hours labour (inc one ore two other small items). As I haven't had a generator before, I thought I would ask the question - seems a lot of labour for a small motor...

Sheesh, 8 hours for the actual work on a small genset is too much. Sensible time would be 2 hours. I do a much bigger genset in that time, incl fuel & oil filters, oil, anode, impeller and all clean up. But that's the time at the coal face, and perhaps some of the 8 hrs time is for the other bits and pieces that you mention, and perhaps some is to allow for unknowns, travel, waste disposal, parts purchase, etc.

Sounds a bit steep to me, what make and model is it? You will find in this industry that dealers are menu price driven and that's it.
To be fair I wouldn't travel from the Hamble to Poole unless I had a days work , however I would tie it in with another job should the need arise, that's how I work.

Guessing while waiting for the reply re what engine
Either a Farryman 18'? Or a yanmar .
You are looking at 3/4 L of An other oil from Hafords ( these engines will not notice if 5-30 or 10-40 )
A belt say £25 if fisher panda or £4 if yanmar
A Johnson pump impeller less than £10
And for you a novice with the manual on your lap of your wife reading it to you 1-2 hrs of "fun "
But think about it -- don,t you think you need to know (and do ) how to change an impeller or belt .
Oil is no biggie as these engines are designed for abuse in the field ,but for the sake of 3/4 L --each year ! And a bit of mess .
Msg to Op --bed time reading your Geny manual :):encouragement:

Next year ,y2 tackle the oil filter on the yanmar -£10 off flea bay -assuming you have a socket set ?

The generator is a Paguro 4000 - it currently runs well but I have no service history for it, so it seems a good idea to have it looked at by someone who actually knows what they are doing (I don't!). The boat is in Poole - any suggestuons?
