I need a 3 metre piece oif either 48mm o/d schedule 40 pipe or of 50mm o/d type 316 polished stainless tube length for my wind generator but the pipe comes from stockists in 6 m lengths. No doubt someone somewhere either needs the same or has a 3 metre length left over.

Anyone care to join me in buying a length or alternatively anyone got a piece left? Near Bristol.

That would be ideal but I have just discovered how ( relatively) cheap they are and the diesel cost of me getting to Minehead would be more than buying a new 6metre pole. But thanks for the offer anyway.

I need some the same size and for the same thing just not got round to it.Still not much help if your Swansea and i'm Cardiff. Also remember to get something with thick walls. Mine 'was' 1.5mm wall and it snapped with Aero4gen on top (that was with supports too)
Edit- just had a quick look and its about 40 quid a metre now:eek:
Never thought about this bit, last time i just bought 30m of 316 for 150 quid!
Think i will weld and beef up the bust one now.
Shame CG Rees has closed in Cardiff but there must be a non-ferrous stockist down your way?

Just a thought folks - I'm pretty sure 48mm is the standard size used in the theatre industry for rigging trusses and whatnot.

If so, ought to be able to get off cuts at any decent lighting / theatrical hire shop.

They have to use good grade aluminium for the safety ratings, but I don't know if that means it will do for your application.

I used marine grade ally for boat legs which was fine BUT added some extra bits in normal outdoor ally and they were gone within a year (that was on deck) I would pay the extra to save 700 quids worth af genny etc going splosh.

Wall is too thin if you are talking about trussing (50mm od) 48.4mm is scaffolding size with 4.7mm wall

As a matter for reference alloy sacaffold tube is the same grade as marine (unless specialist type this is usually in sheet form) :- 6082.
A lot of marine products have been anodised and this will extend life considerably.

Or you can just take it along to your local plastic coater. More practical - ally scaffold tube is hardly likely to have a scratch free cosmetic surface of the sort you need if you want to anodise.

Latest update for those interested. 'Printmet Ltd' in Sully are sorting it out for a good price (01446 737417)Found them by accident really. Very helpful and friendly. SS fabrication/welding.
Ps.It was a bad weld that was the final straw!

A point to remember is how you rig the "out riggers" as their incorrect placement on the pole will cause much higher stress in that area . With correct placement you could use a thin walled tube with no adverse effect.
