The oil pressure meter on my 4108 started misbehaving and I wonder if there are any 'Perkins People' with some clues.
The needle started flickering and now flicks to maximum as soon as I switch on the ignition (the gearbox pressure was doing the same but is now OK ( Ithink they have a common cable)
I tried to trace the wiring back from the sender which I took to be the plugwith two terminals on the Port side above the starter.
There were no wires on the terminals just a groty looking brown wire which was the right length to fit onto one of the terminals. Nearby was another wire which had shorted out and made a bit of a mess of the harness. This wire was live and may be the missing wire to the other terminal.
The oil warning light is still working and goes off when the engine is started.
Can anyone give me some pointers which will help me get the gauge working again? I guess that there will be a live (+ ive) cable to the sensor and another sending the 'sensed' pressure back eventually to the meter.
Any tips which may save my poor old bones from more torture in the engine compartment will be very welcome.
Th eproblem began on a fairy long solo trip at the same time that my (formerly) trusty engine started overheating, everything seemed to be going wrong.
I dont think that the two problems are linked so I am saving the overheating problem for another day!!
Regards to all.

"I dont think that the two problems are linked"

I don't know the 4108, so I can't help with that, but the two could be linked. If the temperature gauge wire is shorted to earth, the guage will read hot. With a straight short, it'll go off the scale, but if it's a fairly high resistance short, it could easily just read high enough to scare you. That would be a lot easier and cheaper to put right than many causes of overheating!

Thanks Steve. The temperature Gauge and wiring was fine. It was the oil pressure gauge that was going bannanas!
The overheating was definatly a reality, at first I thought that it was smoke....help.. rehearsing my Mayday... but just steam!!
thanks again

The oil presure sender on my engines is near the fuel injection pump (at least it is on my engines!) check around there. there is a manual for a 4108 on the internet, try a google search for it, or search the forums.

If you can trace both ends of the cable, it should be possible to work out what goes where. Alternatively run completely new cables to the gauge and sender. Some senders have two outputs for dual staion use so for one instrument you will only use of them.
